    Hello!

Here is my updated version of House of the Rising Sun. I think I can hear the notes on the A string more clearly in the strumming section and I managed to use a four finger picking approach in the picking section, so I guess there is an improvement. ๐Ÿ˜Š

I’ve been looking through my very first RC101 submissions and found House of the Rising Sun, which I submitted in November 2019.

Andrew suggested in his feedback to slow down the strumming sections and focus on transitioning to each chord while keeping the timing steady. I also want to accent the melody notes more. And maybe I manage to switch from a 3 finger picking approach to 4 fingers as suggested in the lesson. That will be quite a challenge for the muscle memory. ๐Ÿ˜…

I played through the arrangement a couple of times today and I am still struggling to get to the 12th fret in time in the strumming section. ๐Ÿ˜… So I hope I can accomplish that in this challenge. ๐Ÿ˜Š

Here is the recording from November 2019:

    Hi all!

For the last two months I haven’t found much time to play ukulele… I wasn’t sure if I would be able to participate this month, but today I decided to participate last minute. ๐Ÿ˜… I revisited Aura Lee because last time when it was part of a challenge I was on holiday and only had my travel soprano ukulele with me. So this time I played it on my tenor and went with all thumb picking because I like the soft sound ๐Ÿ˜Š.

@Andrew Thank you so much! Here is the original recording with my smartphone and I think the melody notes are more audible in that version actually. ๐Ÿ˜…
In my entry I used the pick up of the ukulele and it feels like the high notes get picked up differently than the low notes. I can adjust tone and volume on the uke itself, but I can’t hear any difference when turning the tone setting completely up or down. That’s a bit strange. I’ll keep experimenting with EQ and compression though!

    @The_Bumble_Bard
Thank you! ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ’• Now that I’ve had a closer listen to the smartphone version, I think it actually sounds a bit better. ๐Ÿ˜… I like the audio effects on the pick up version a lot though, so I’ll try to experiment more in the future. ๐Ÿ˜Š
When listening to your entry, I was smiling constantly because of that (emotional support?) reindeer penguin ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜… (I love plushies so much, no matter how much older I get, haha ๐Ÿ˜‚). I was sick at the time, lying in bed, and it just brightened up my day! And the clawhammer version was great too, you always come up with so much creativity. โค๏ธ

    Hi everyone!

I chose Feliz Navidad this month and really enjoyed learning this arrangement. ๐Ÿ˜Š The chorus section is quite challenging in comparison to the verse. I’m still struggeling a bit to get a loud sound out of the slides (especially measure 11 with the g chord shape).
This time I used a different recording setup again. ๐Ÿ˜… I watched the Ableton tutorial from the recording guide and I was surprised how much of a difference the living room reverb and the acoustic compressor make. I was kinda overwhelmed with all the audio effects and which reverb to choose from that big list of in-built reverbs. ๐Ÿ˜… I guess now I finally have a setup to work with. ๐Ÿ˜Š However, I am not completely satisfied with the result, mainly because of the low g string being way to loud and the a string being sooo quiet. I tried an equalizer, but reducing the lows makes it sound a bit flat… Anyways, time is up so I live with that version now. ๐Ÿ˜…

@Andrew Thank you so much! I use the ukulele’s built in pickup and an external audio interface. I didn’t add a lot of effects in the recording program, I just amplified the higher frequencies (which amplified the string noise as well I guess) and added some noise reduction. I still have to learn how the effects affect the recording and how to combine them though. ๐Ÿ˜Š

    @The_Bumble_Bard
Thank you so much! I enjoyed your clawhammer version of Etude no. 5. I like how you can achieve a completely different vibe with that technique. ๐Ÿ˜Š I love this etude too, it is so relaxing to me.

    Hello everyone!

What a fun challenge, I really like the variety this month!
After listening to all the etudes, I narrowed the list down to 5 etudes and chose no. 22, really beautiful. ๐Ÿ˜Š I enjoyed to hear the theory behind the tune, the lesson was great. I didn’t know that key change actually has the fancy name modulation. ๐Ÿ˜…
The etude was harder than I expected and I had more problems with string noise than usualโ€ฆ
So here is my best take.

Looking forward to learning a new Christmas tune next month. ๐Ÿ˜Š

    Hi all!

Here is the Frightful Strumming Etude. I love those strumming lessons with a more complex pattern than the island strum and without singing! ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜…
I really like how this arrangement sounds on Low G. ๐Ÿ˜Š

    Happy Halloween!

    Hello everyone!

    So many great early entries!

As a big Zelda fan, learning the Kakariko Village theme was a no brainer! But I wanted it to be a solo chord melody, so I combined both parts. That was a lot of fun! It was actually quite easy because the base of chords and melody notes were already there. This time I recorded audio and video seperately again.
Oh, and I played it a bit slower than Matt’s version because of some tricky chord transitions.

(Exclude me from the price drawing this month)

Thank you! Haha, yes, I thought I’d just be brave this time. ๐Ÿ˜Š Your performance was great too!

    Hi all!

Another last minute post from Germany! I recorded today morning but then I visited my parents and did the video editing afterwards. ๐Ÿ˜…

I didn’t plan to participate in this month’s challenge as I don’t watch TV (or netflix, amazon series in general) and so I am not really familiar with the tunes (the arrangements are great, though!). The easiest of the arrangements requires singing and I am a bad singer… so I thought I just skip this challenge. But then I thought I could maybe play the melody on piano to dodge the singing part. So I figured out the melody and put the uke part and the piano part together. ๐Ÿ˜Š I am totally fine with this not counting as an entry. ๐Ÿ˜…

Edit: Okay so I decided I just go for it and post a video of me singing. ๐Ÿ˜… I wasn’t happy with my recordings though because when I sing, it always sounds like I’m whispering or just talking (I guess because I don’t want to be heard and I am not loud enough). So I looked up some warm up excercises for singing and recorded again. I can actually hear a difference in my voice before and after the excercises. I kinda like the “lip roll” thing lol. My voice is still quiet (not to mention in pitch ๐Ÿ˜…) but well you can’t learn to sing in a day haha. ๐Ÿ˜‚

@The_Bumble_Bard omg that was so funny! ๐Ÿคฃ It is especially funny to me because when I learn to sing and strum a new song (and I still need to get the strumming pattern into my muscle memory) I start by humming the lyrics or I meow them exactly like you did! ๐Ÿ˜‚ The animation is so cute as well! Aaand I love cats so much. ๐Ÿ’•

    Hi all,

this month I chose the Travis Picking Etude – a simple and beautiful arrangement. ๐Ÿ˜Š
The recording features my new low G ukulele from the February challenge! ๐Ÿ˜Š I love it soo much. ๐Ÿ’•
(It’s still in that state where it gets out of tune very fast and it still smells like new haha ๐Ÿ˜…)

I didn’t find the time for creating an original (maybe I have too many hobbies and not enough time ๐Ÿ˜…) and got sick (influenza) for one week as well…

Good job everyone who posted an original tune! ๐Ÿ˜Š I listened to all of them and I am impressed by the composing skills of this community.
