johanna2509ParticipantI wanna be like you!
johanna2509ParticipantI think it’s helpful to have all the different sizes. Yep, stretch chords are easier on soprano, but playing on 12+ frets is more difficult. Most sopranos only have 15 frets which is not enough for a lot of RC arrangements. Also hammer-ons are very silent on sopranos and difficult to perform, at least for me.
So it depends on the piece you wanna learn, and like Robin said, your personal preferences.April 11, 2020 at 11:13 am in reply to: Participate in the April 2020 Member Challenge – WIN Kanile’a Tenor Ukulele! #36800

Here is my entry for April. First time to incorporate the triplet strum in a song. And wow, Matt is a real master of this technique!
This piece sounds super cute so I chose to play it on Bernadette’s signature ukulele.Happy Easter everyone, stay safe.

johanna2509Participant@taylor22jane That was super cool! I guess it’s a lot of fun to jam with family members 🙂
Unfortunately I have to be my own band, no one plays an instrument apart from me.March 21, 2020 at 2:46 pm in reply to: Participate in the March 2020 Member Challenge – Classical Themed! #36342
johanna2509ParticipantHere is my try on Lagrima. The recording is from March 10. I couldn’t get a better one and I also started to learn other songs. I know that some parts are not in time, but it is a lot better than in the beginning of the month.
Stay safe, play ukulele.

johanna2509ParticipantThanks, I’ll check out those links. Well, I guess I have to learn a lot and train my ear to create arrangements. Playing songs by ear is definitely a life goal.

johanna2509ParticipantI just watched the live lesson on youtube, great as always! Unfortunatly I can’t watch them live cause it would be in the middle of the night in Germany haha.
I have another question: Recently I wanted to make my own arrangement of an existing song. But what should I figure out first, the harmony or the melody? I started with the melody, then counted the flats and figured out the key. But adding the harmony was very difficult and I had to google the chords. I wasn’t able to find the right chord that fits to the corresponding melody note.
So is there a proper way or order to arrange a song?March 7, 2020 at 8:13 am in reply to: Participate in the March 2020 Member Challenge – Classical Themed! #36140
johanna2509ParticipantHad a stressful exam yesterday. Waltz in C was perfect to calm me down. This is easier than my current level, but Lagrima seems a little bit too hard. However, I hope I can improve and show my progress in the end of the month.
So here is Waltz in C:
Looking forward to all the Moonlight Sonata entries! Nice job, Robin!

johanna2509ParticipantLagrima is also my choice. I can’t put my ring finger underneath the middle too. It kinda works when playing really slow but the string doesn’t ring out when I’m speeding up. So I use the same fingering for the Amaj7 and Gmaj7 in bar 5. That way I can just move the fingering.
The switch from end of 5 to 6 causes so much unwanted string noise because all the fingers move to another position…
The whole finger frenzy is easier on my high g tenor, but I like the sound of the low G more and I only have a concert low G ukulele.February 6, 2020 at 5:47 pm in reply to: Participate in the February 2020 Member Challenge – Technique Toolbox Courses! #35557

johanna2509ParticipantHi all!
In January I worked on songs that were on my wanna-learn list (Can’t Help Falling in Love, Puff the Magic Dragon and Toss a Coin to Your Witcher). I also got an electric guitar and it’s so much fun! I am just messing around with power chords, but that seems to be enough to start with in the beginning. The harmonics version of Amazing Grace was really an extraordinary piece to learn! I’m playing the artificial harmonics different than the way it is teached in the toolbox though. That’s because I copied the technique from Vasko in December when I learned his version of All I want for Christmas Is You. Now it feels weird to use the thumb, so I’m just sticking to the ring finger.
I feel like the harmonics on the low g string are more difficult, I miss them more often. I am looking forward to the feedback to know what I should work on!December 12, 2019 at 1:58 pm in reply to: Participate in the December 2019 Member Challenge – LAST CHANCE! Win Kanile’a! #34271

johanna2509ParticipantAndrew – Thank you for the feedback video! That was really helpful. Now I have to get less nervous when recording so I don’t forget to not lift my fingers too much and stay calm 🙂

What a gorgeous melody! I love Matt’s all thumb picking arrangements, I really like the tone it produces. I started practicing this song right after the lesson has been published. I am playing on my new tenor ukulele, and I had a lot of difficulties at the start. I tried playing songs I know, but the stretch chords from my muscle memory weren’t that correctly positioned and I needed to adjust that. Do you guys often switch between the different sizes to get used to the minor differences of the frets?
However, playing those high notes is a lot easier now (also due to the cut away), perfect for this arrangement 🙂
Another thing that’s annoying me are the pull of noises when switching quickly between chords. It happened some times in the video. I can’t control it, some takes are free of it, but then there are other mistakes.
It is the first time though I picked the intermediate choice, level up I guess 😀
I’ll go on to work on Greensleeves now that I have a low G ukulele 😀 It seems to be easy after a few playthroughs.I am playing for one year now!

johanna2509ParticipantI only found out that it means “don’t worry”, although I googled very hard to find another definition haha 🙂
Too bad none of my friends are native english speakers, so I guess I will not have the opportunity to use the phrase anytime soon. -
