johanna2509ParticipantHaha thanks Rickey, I had to look up the phrase “do not fret” 🙂
@Andrew Thank you for the fast feedback! I noticed that Matt plays the up strums and ghost notes softer and the down strums harder. So the up strums and ghost notes are more like a filler inbetween the melody. I will try it out!November 8, 2019 at 9:24 am in reply to: Participate in the November 2019 Member Challenge – 2nd Chance to WIN Kanile’a! #33474

Here is my attempt on House of the Rising Sun. Matt did such great job by making this wonderful arrangement! I love the strumming section, the concept of the ghost notes were new for me. I also learned to do the standard D chord with one finger haha. I wasn’t able to do that before practicing this piece. I know I need to work on those pauses when jumping to the 12th fret and back.
Additionally, I think my fingerpicking isn’t the right/intended way, but it works so fine for me! Although my fingers are stretched out, I am fast enough.
However, I have one question: In Matts playing, the melody note on the a string, even on the higher frets, really pops out, how does he do that? 🙂November 1, 2019 at 11:28 am in reply to: Participate in the November 2019 Member Challenge – 2nd Chance to WIN Kanile’a! #33330
johanna2509ParticipantI already learned House of the Rising Sun, but I’m still struggling with the barre chord D to the three finger F transition. It slows me down so much (harder than the Sound of Silence transitions for me haha). I hope I can get this smooth soon.
I love Sweet Child O Mine, but this is way out of my level 🙂(My new uke hasn’t arrived yet, maybe it will be more like a christmas than a birthday present)
Jina – the description says, the solo is optional 🙂

johanna2509ParticipantHey Andrew, I’m still working on the proper right hand form. It is so difficult for me to bring my hand in the exact same position as you showed in the video. However, I guess my fingers are atleast less stretched out than before. But it doesn’t feel quite right. I can’t position my hand more parallel to the strings, because then I can’t pluck them anymore. But you said, bending the wrist is also wrong, so I’ll try to avoid that. I think I have to spend some more time to find that correct position. Any more tips?
For demonstration, I played the first half of Sound of Silence again.

johanna2509ParticipantThank you all for your kind words 🙂
@becky7777 Resting the arm on the body of the uke works, like Andrew showed in the video. Now I need to get used to the new hand position ^^
@jinajupiter Didn’t think about that, but Luna fits indeed 🙂 I was searching for a tenor ukulele (budget about 300€) and I ordered the Flight Victoria CEQ. I’ve been waiting for almost a month now (there seems to be a high demand for that model) and I’m so excited!October 13, 2019 at 4:46 pm in reply to: Participate in the October 2019 Member Challenge – WIN a CUSTOM Kanile’a! #32576
johanna2509ParticipantThank you Andrew for your feedback video! I knew something wasn’t right with my fingerpicking, but I couldn’t tell what exactly.
I thought the four finger approach was the reason for feeling uncomfortable, because most of the time I chose the three finger approach where I can anchor with the ring finger. Thus, the floating position was new for me.
I’ll check out the lesson again, thank you for pointing it out!
@ripley thank you! I had fun decorating the piano 🙂October 13, 2019 at 12:49 pm in reply to: Participate in the October 2019 Member Challenge – WIN a CUSTOM Kanile’a! #32571

I know it’s not perfect, but I felt like recording today. My new uke should arrive next week, so I plan to upload a second (hopefully smoother version) in the following weeks!
Looking forward to all submissions and halloween costumes 🙂So here is my entry:
@nthibode Your entry was AMAZING! Everything was just on spot.October 4, 2019 at 7:54 am in reply to: Participate in the October 2019 Member Challenge – WIN a CUSTOM Kanile’a! #31107
johanna2509Participant@lisadmh I changed the fingering for the Bb: I actually exchanged the three finger G chord shape with a barre chord G shape. I think it’s easier and faster to place one finger over three strings, than placing two fingers on different strings. For now this works fine for me, but I don’t know if there might be any reason not to do it.
johanna2509Participant@nthibode I’m living in Hesse, in the Odenwald region near Darmstadt/Frankfurt am Main. The Black Forest is a beautiful area, I was there once in Todtnau/Feldberg in winter to learn snowboarding 🙂
It’s kinda magical how the ukulele makes people happy all over the world 🙂
johanna2509ParticipantI don’t know if thats even possible, but how about an arrangement of Through The Fire And Flames by Dragonforce? Not the insane guitar riffs, but the lyrics as a chord melody? I have no idea which songs are doable on the uke and which are just too hard to adapt.
Here is a mandolin/ukulele cover, so it seems to be somewhat possible haha.September 6, 2019 at 5:35 pm in reply to: Participate in the September 2019 Member Challenge – Next Level Strumming! #30256
johanna2509ParticipantThank you Andrew! I just tuned my uke, the e string was half a step down. My ears did not notice that, but I remember hitting one of the tuners with my elbow earlier that day haha. I don’t know why, but this time recording was kind of stressfull, maybe that’s why I was speeding up towards the end.
I always appreciate the feedback 🙂September 6, 2019 at 10:13 am in reply to: Participate in the September 2019 Member Challenge – Next Level Strumming! #30238
johanna2509ParticipantHey, I am also uploading the percussive rhythm strumming. What a cool technique! It is so much fun to play and it can spice up a lot of songs I like to strum and sing. So I just tried it out and applied the percussive beat to a song! I chose Teenagers from My Chemical Romance.

johanna2509ParticipantThank you Stephen for your feedback! I started using the picado. It will need some practice, but I am making progress and a few parts already sound smoother than before.
Also, when I bend my thumb, I can get more volume out of the uke, but it creates a more “knocking” sound.
I am still having fun with this arrangememt 🙂August 9, 2019 at 11:20 am in reply to: Participate in the August 2019 Member Challenge – World Music Themed! #29600
johanna2509ParticipantHi all! I’m uploading so early because I will be on vacation for the next two weeks and I will only take my soprano travel uke with me and not my concert, on which I’m practicing all the time 🙂
This song was much out of my comfort zone, especially because of the pull-offs. I did not use the picado technique, too much confusion haha. Also, after the Rasgueado strum, I just can’t come up with the thumb, it feels so awkward and I can’t control the volume… so I use the index finger.
I will continue practicing on my soprano the following weeks to make it more smooth and get the timing right 🙂
Have a nice weekend!
johanna2509ParticipantThanks for sharing the tabs, the acoustic version sounds beautiful. I have no idea how to start transcribing it to uke tabs… The last time I tried that, I had problems fitting all those high and low notes into the small range of the ukulele. But I think it’s not impossible.
Also, I never saw that strange nike symbol 😀 -
