kanae926ParticipantWow! That was so beautiful! I love that some members are able to make variations and put their own flare into the arrangements making it unique. Some day, I hope to be able to do that. 🙂
Thanks for posting your video, deadbuggy! Well done.

kanae926ParticipantI had this same issue…
What I discovered is that although my pull off from 3 to 2 sounded okay, I was too loud on the next pull off to the open string. I think the reason for this has to do with the fact that the string is still anchored on the second fret when pulling off on 3 but the open string is more free to ring out so you can’t use the same amount of force. I had to pull off softer to get a similar volume, otherwise I ended up making a loud “boing” sound. lol. I definitely needed to loop this section many times before it sounded more even.
I also noticed that a slight change in the angle of my fingers when they pull off made a huge difference. I was grabbing too much string before.
kanae926ParticipantWow, Andrew! What gorgeous wood! It sounds so beautiful. Can’t wait for your first lesson. ☺️
Congrats! 🎉

kanae926ParticipantWow, Brett! 😳
You’re rockin’ some major style! So awesome! 🔥🔥🔥
I can already see Andrew sharing that on the next newsletter or Facebook post. 😆
kanae926ParticipantOh, I didn’t realize the Waterman came in a different size other than soprano (you said all four of your ukes are concert and I didn’t even make the connection, lol). 😝
I love that spalted maple!! 😍

kanae926ParticipantLOL! Goes to show how enticing the free lessons are (just enough to make you want more). Andrew’s marketing degree came in handy, I bet. 😉 I was drawn in fairly quickly, too.
Welcome to the RC101 community, crazihippichic!
kanae926ParticipantNice collection, crazihippichic! I just bought the thin body version of that Kala concert (KA-SSTU-SMC-C) and it’ll probably get delivered within a week or two. I can’t wait…the spalted maple on the back and sides are so pretty! Your Waterman is super cute! Is that one glow in the dark? For a small plastic uke, I thought about getting a Waterman in pink or this Flight TUS50. The Flight uke isn’t all plastic (has a laminate top), but I read and have seen reviews that it sounds great, too.
kanae926ParticipantTEASE!
But, in all honesty, it’s very exciting for RC101. Can’t wait to see what you have in store for us!

kanae926ParticipantAndrew, I REALLY enjoy this etude (coincidentally, 13 is also my favorite number). It’s so pretty and I love playing it. It was already my “next to learn” piece when you included it in this month’s challenge, so thank you!!
Sorry for the terrible lighting and soft sound…
Happy Labor Day (for those of you in the US)! I hope you’re having a great holiday Monday. 🙂
kanae926ParticipantKay, you keep posting the best videos! I love these. LOL.
So recently, I got my solid mango Pono and it’s the first one that didn’t come standard with Aquila nylgut strings like my first two (laminate) ukes. They’re transparent and more flexy (might be due to slightly smaller gauge, I’m not sure). They’re taking much longer to settle than I’m used to with Aquila. However, I find that I’m really liking the mellow sound of them as opposed to the brighter sound of Aquila. It pairs well with the warm sound of my mango. I also like the feel of them (smoother with less tension) in my opinion when I’m plucking.
I actually don’t know what kind they are, so I’m going to need to ask HMS (The Ukulele Site) the specific brand and type. I’ll have to get more! It really does come down to preference. I’m not sure if I’d like these strings on all my ukes (I quite like Aquila on my other two). I’m waiting for two new ukes to be delivered in a couple weeks (strung low G). I’m sure they’ll come standard with Aquila, but I’m looking forward to trying more types of strings to see how they sound/feel.
After reading Ko’olau string descriptions and watching that video, I suspect they’re Ko’olau Mahana strings. I’ll have to try out the Martins since Alex described them to be very comparable on Pono. Thanks again for posting that video!

kanae926ParticipantCongrats on getting the cool new uke, Ukulelelady! One can never have too many (IMHO). 😉
kanae926ParticipantI bought an Islander MT-4-RB (tenor version of the September challenge giveaway prize) and a Kala KA-SSTU-SMC-C (thinbody solid spruce top cutaway travel uke with laminate spalted maple back and sides in concert).
Both were on sale and I had an unexpected $500 award from work that I wanted to spend. Albeit to say, after adding on a bunch of extra strings, a shirt, and a hardcase for the tenor, I spent just under $520 (😱). I didn’t NEED two more ukuleles, but when in Rome! I don’t have a tenor yet and since both will be strung with low G, they’ll be super fun additions to my collection.
I’ll need to take a picture of all of my ukes together in a couple weeks when I get my two new babies delivered. 😉
kanae926Participant😂😂😂
I’d like to see how Andrew responds to that! LOL.
Miztaken, have you looked into thin body ukes? There’s less thickness in the body of the uke and may help with the “short arm syndrome” as you call it. My new uke I ordered from HMS (The Ukulele Site) is a thin body Kala. It’s kind of like a pancake, but still resonates pretty well from what I’ve read and heard online.
I think your Sydney neighbor, Lyndall, might have this travel Kala (in tenor or concert, I’m not sure).

kanae926ParticipantThe Ukulele Site is having Labor Day Weekend Specials! Not everything is on sale, but of the ones that are, OMG! 😲😲😲
I just ordered two ukuleles (one concert, one tenor; both in Low G). I got a nice bonus from work and I blew it all! 😂
