kayleighbMemberThanks Stephen. Makes complete sense. I kept tripping up over my fingers in the many takes before I got that one so the suggested changes should make it sound cleaner. I also had new strings on so it’s taken a little while to adjust to a new fretting pressure, I’ve only ever used Aquila but these are flurocarbon. Pay off in sound but hard to get used too 😊

kayleighbMemberAh thanks Dave. Not sure if I always hold the uke like that. That seems to be my recording pose rather than my practise pose which is usually half slumped on the sofa haha. Saw you practising on your insta stories, didn’t realise until then you were here too!

kayleighbMemberHere is mine. One day, I will be able to press record and not fluff it 😁

kayleighbMemberWow wow wow!!! What an amazing Uke!
For October I’ll be doing the Walking Dead. But I reaaaaallllly want to try St James’ Infirmary but I think it’s a little out of my league at the moment 😉

kayleighbMemberThanks Andrew. Here is a little video I took to show what I mean. The 2nd pull off has that “boing” type sound.
My new strings are still settling in too so that isn’t helping as they go out of tune so quick 🤨

kayleighbMemberSorry if this such a newb question. Any tips on how to get your pull offs all at the same volume. E.g bar 11 of Etude 13. I tend to find the first is really quiet (3 to 2) then the second really loud (2-0). I feel like I’m using equal force on the strings but I’m clearly not?

kayleighbMemberThanks Andrew!
I don’t actually warm up. I know I should and it’s on my list to build a warm up routine but I knew you had a video coming soon so will hold out for this 😁
kayleighbMemberI’ve just changed my strings from Aquila Nylgut to Martin Flourocarbon. Yes they are not staying in tune at the moment but I’ve been told it takes a while for the strings to settle.
Southern Ukelele Store (the equivalent of Uke Republic in the UK in my opinion) did a video recently on strings which may help anyone interested
From their video it looks like a) personal preference and b) differenr strings suit different ukes
I personally think the Martin’s have made a bigs difference sound wise to my solid mahogany uke.

kayleighbMemberOk here goes…
Here is Spongebob from June 2017And now August 2018
A few mistakes and still not up to 100% speed. There is a definate improvement however I struggled with the stretch on the concert size uke. I feel like I should be better than this but I haven’t practised this since the original challenge.

kayleighbMemberWas struggling to work out why I was finding spongebob so challenging considering I’ve already done it once, albeit at 50% speed. I’m on a bigger uke so the stretches and fret space is different! So tempted to switch back to my Soprano for this one….!
kayleighbMemberI had this same dilemma. I had a cheap Mahalo toy uke as I call it to start on. I upgraded to my Ohana at Christmas. It’s solid mahagony, visually I prefer a darker wood. Mine seems to have a slightly longer neck than other concerts which wasn’t deliberate. Extra fret space is good but makes the stretches I was ok with on my soprano a little harder. I got mine from Southern Ukelele Store in the Uk.
Best advice I can give is find a local store and have a play on different sizes and different woods to see what you are drawn too. Then you can buy from there or elsewhere e.g Uke Republic assuming you are US based.
If you have a look on youtube for Southern Ukelele Store they have been doing some great comparison videos like this one;
My next one will be mango wood. I’ve been loving the look and sound of a couple of mango wood Ukes recently.
kayleighbMemberThat’s a beaut 😘

kayleighbMemberI’m back in this month. Sat out last months challenge for a few reasons. I’m going to give Spongebob a go. This was the first song I played in the June 2017 challenge after I’d just started playing my uke. Admittedly I haven’t practised this one since then but will post my original challenge video along with my updated one to see the difference a year makes. I’ll be focussing on speed again this month.

kayleighbMemberCongratulations Kaizendon!
Ah Drew it’s ok, we all make mistakes so don’t worry about it too much. The giveaway is just a bonus for me, not the main reason I’m here (although that Mango Uke is super nice!). Don’t worry about an extra entry, like I said it’s not my focus 😊

kayleighbMemberOk here goes. It’s not perfect (or anywhere near 😂) but my focus this month was trying to build speed.
