Participant@andrew pretty embarrassed to post at this point but here is a little bit. Your help is very much appreciated.

I am working on the first etude in order to strengthen 4 finger picking. What I have been disatisfied with in my progress on this is that once I add a bit of speed many notes sound staccato-ish rather than having sustain. Of coarse the sustain is nice when going slow, or when faster and plucking the first and 4th strings together and on other chords too; however not so with many single notes. Again this is only when I play up to speed. I watched a video Matt did where he covered timber, rubato, and sustain. My biggest take away from that with regard to sustain was for me to make sure my fingers are close to the frets and to leave fingers down as long as possible prior to changing notes. The second of these being difficult as I am trying to speed up and bring it to normal speed. Do you have any other suggestions?August 1, 2021 at 7:58 pm in reply to: Participate in the July 2021 Member Challenge – Theme: Summer Songs! #47857ldarrow

As a beginner, my mind said work on “summertime Blues”, but as a Charlestonian my heart told me I could not pass on “summertime”. It is supposed to be a challenge and going beyond my skill level should help me improve. Justification for my selection, haha. Was fun but definitely bit off more than I could chew.for anyone who listens, don’t let this be the last version of this stuck in your head. Rather look up either Mahalia Jackson or Ella Fitzgerald.-

ParticipantThank you @robinboyd and @justchris. I have only just started with ukulele about 6 months ago, so don’t know about this alternate tuning, but will look it up. Also have not yet mustered the courage to change strings. I fear after removing I will not be able to get the new ones on. I know it is inevitable and something I need to learn. Is there a specific brand/type that you know that is low tension?

I worked on “Rock around the Clock”. Was difficult and still needs work. Enjoyed watching everyone’s entries. Good luck in upcoming drawing. Also, I thought I had already posted this but something must have gone wrong. If my post appears twice, sorry about that.

Participant@lyndallk love your performance. Lovely song I would like to learn some day. Maybe I will have a low G at some point in the future. Thank you for your performance.

Come as you are. Struggling with this. The Dm bar or G and C is difficult for me. At first thought i would not get it at all, but it is somewhat there. Still have a bit of time this month to improve and repost. But here it is so far.

My performance of Matt’s version of Avatar: The Last Airbender. I used to watch this with my daughter when she was younger. Wonderful memories. Enjoyed learning this, certainly there is much room for improvement.

ParticipantHere is my “Spanish Romance”. It is such a pretty song and I do not, yet, have the skills to do it justice. However I am happy that after completing the beginner coarse in mid January that I was even able to attempt this. Progress.

ParticipantAndrew, thanks for feedback. I do feel a need for working on bar chords. Not just the form, but I do not believe I have developed the needed strength in my fingers. During my practices I always play ‘Dream a Little dream of Me’ a few times to help with that since it uses many bar chords. I will take your advice and and the walk down section of “into the Maze” to help improve form. I was really nervous as it was my first participation. Was really fun and I see how beneficial it is in many ways.

ParticipantAm excited to try to learn Spanish Romance. This is one I have been hoping to learn but all that I had found so far required an alternate tuning (which I really don’t want to do for just one song–I only have 1 instrument and usually when I practice I am playing around with a couple of songs and etudes to try to develop different skills as I am a very fresh beginner. Thus, alternate tuning is not practical for me). Looks like this one uses standard tuning. Thank you for doing this and making it an option for the monthly challenge.
