@andrew- I have a question regarding reading notation.

When you (yourself) look at sheet music, can you just start playing with reading it? (is that our ultimate goal?) or do you look at it to understand the rhythm and learn it a piece at a time?

At this point, I’m moving slowly through the course to really absorb things (and click on several links you reference). I’m currently on the E string lesson.

I’m learning the notes and understanding how to read them (accidentals, the key etc..) but— when it’s time to play the music with just sheet music (not the tab combo), I’m not quickly looking at it knowing instantly it’s “b”…or “accidental…natural C” etc.. I am able to look at it and know the notes and find them on the fretboard…know the rhythm–then listen to the tab viewer to make sure I’m correct…then play with it. I hope this makes sense

@rickeymike- I would recommend going to a music store to play and get a feel for both Tenor and Concert ukes….and see if you like them. If you do, then maybe get your next uke Low G so you have it for Andrew’s lessons. It just means the G string is an octave lower…so some songs sound better on it.

If you like the feel of Tenor or Concert better than Soprano, maybe get one in high G as well to replace your Soprano. There are lots of decent ukes at good prices that would be an upgrade.

I know for me….I’ve held them all and my favorite is Tenor. I have 1 uke that is Low G

    Hope this is helpful

I’m sorry to hear about your kitty @lisadmh, but she sure looks like she knows the song is for her! and…I liked her winking at the camera. Very pretty! Looking forward to hearing the full song later this month

I’m excited about the January challenge. Although I love learning new songs and techniques, I’m looking forward to spending January on refinements.

    Execution:
I’m looking to focus on smooth, clean, in time playing with no gaps. Currently, most songs I play have a gap or multiple gaps/delays throughout the song. Sometimes it’s due to memorization snags…and other times it’s a challenge with the chord change/fingering. I take quite a bit of time to memorize a song and with work travel, I can learn a song and post for the challenge but I feel I’m at 80% for performances.
I’m a beginner on the edge of “seasoned beginner”. I’m aspiring to hit “seasoned beginner” status with this challenge (or soon thereafter).

    Application:
I’m going to be working on Waltz in C for the month of January. Memorization will be minimal since I’m familiar with the song. Although a level 1 song, I find it to be challenging. There is movement up/down the neck, there is alot of flow in the song and includes staccato and some fingering that can hinder timing. My goal is to play the song smoothly and in time…and with feeling.

    Evaluation:
I travel for work; so I will have 18 days in January to practice. I am estimating 30 hours of practice time for my ukulele (6 of the days at 2 hours and 12 days at 1 hour). I plan on evaluating where I am at each week. After week 1, I will record a practice video to evaluate as I go. I will be using the tab viewer as I loop bars and sections of bars together.

    Happy New Year Everyone!!

    Hi Andrew,
I’m so happy I found RockClass about 6 weeks after I started playing the Uke. I feel really lucky because I had learned a few things but didn’t feel like I had structure or a plan for where I was going. I knew I wanted to learn chord melody and fingerstyle playing but was fumbling around. I stumbled across your Canon in D video on YT and joined immediately.

I don’t have any specific requests; I really enjoy what we have here (there is alot)…and with the Standard Notation course coming, that will keep me busy along with the challenges, weekly songs and a few I want to learn that are out there now. I feel like I have options with beginner and intermediate songs…and can push myself when I’m not traveling as much in a month.

I love your teaching style and the addition of others with specific focus is great. I’m glad more Low G songs are coming….I feel like I neglect my Low G uke a bit!!

I’m excited for 2019. I can’t wait to see where we’ll all be at by next December.

You can take it to a music store to get the button installed. They do it all the time. I would not personally drill a hole in my uke but a professional does it all the time. I would not take a button off of a uke though….

I can’t wait for the new course! I feel great about my progress this year learning the Uke….and have gravitated to chord melody/fingerstyle playing. It takes me quite awhile to memorize the pieces. It will help so much to actually be able to read the music to learn it–especially pieces we already learned but may not play regularly.

Enjoyed it RickyMike; it’s great you can sing and play. I cannot do both at once…and really can’t sing at all!

Really cool Lisa! What was on your set list?
Did you bring the music or had you memorized everything?

Here is First Noel for December’s Challenge. I would like to learn more than one song this month, so this one is in early.

The site isn’t taking my donation–so I’ll try again and send you an email Andrew.

I’ve loved everyone’s Moon, but the singing made this really special. Great job Robin and Tiffany! What a beautiful song and performance
