I just bought a new Pono Mango uke a couple of weeks ago. It’s beautiful, but I’m struggling with the strings and feel it’s a bit difficult to play. I think it’s the strings. The C string is a wound string…and they included a card saying it’s D’addario strings. I’ve listened to alot of videos about strings. I thought fluorocarbon would be good for fingerstyle which I am focusing most of my effort on.

I’m thinking about taking it to a uke shop and either get Aquilla’s (like my other ukes) or maybe try Worth brown strings….but I’m nervous that I may make another mistake if the Worth strings aren’t any easier to play.

Has anyone had this issue of getting a new uke and it being hard to play?
Anyone using Worth brown strings and liking them?

I’ve already submitted Walking Dead for the challenge this month. But I wanted to post where I’m at so far with St. James Infirmary. This is one of my favorite lessons so far & I really want to be able to play it. It’s a bit beyond my current skill level. I’ll post again once I get it down more (please excuse the weed wacker buzz in the background).

Wow, the November challenge and song is exciting…..Taimane!! The additional prizes are awesome as well! Although the song is beyond my skill level, I”m going to see what I can do. I’m currently working on 2 other songs more advanced and it’s helped me alot.

Kayleigh, I actually like it slower now that I’ve heard more versions. The chord change looked good to me!

I’ve always had alot of respect for musicians, but since learning the ukulele, I truly realize the time and commitment needed for practice. I can only imagine the thousands of hours musicians put in to hone their craft. I’m happy to be part of it although I’m at the beginning (I learned some chords on a guitar years ago but cannot play one song….so the Uke is really my first instrument). I can’t wait to see results compound and learn more songs quicker. I’m at 1 or 2 per month.

Looking forward to seeing the rest of it once you get there! (love the skeleton…haha). I’m working on St.James Infirmary which is beyond my skills at this point. But I do feel like it helps to stretch. Other things also start to seem easier!

I had fun learning this song. I used a different fingering on the A flat minor but it was comfortable. The pause before the rasgueado strum was intentional. During practice I played around with different tempo and volume changes but recording video…I kept making errors doing that.

I like the group jam; sounds cool! I can’t sing…or sing and play at the same time but I do like to hear someone else sing and be able to play along.

Also looking forward to the Low G lessons. So much to learn!

*I’ve been learning in bits…Jingle Bell Rock. I love the arrangement; it’s fun. I’d really like to have it down by the holidays. Looking forward to whatever comes out in December!!

    Hi-
Thanks so much for taking our questions.

    1. What is the biggest point of difference Kanile’a has vs other high end brands (Koolau, Kamaka and KoAloha)

    2. Is there any consideration for making an archtop model? if so, what wood combination would you use?

I love it! I’ve not heard of Milo wood- it’s beautiful.
Sounds great too. I am ready for the first Low G lesson.
What was your wood choice for the top?

Here is my submission for Etude #13. I had a fingering snag right before the ritardando…so it’s a little off. That hasn’t been my challenge area while practicing the song.
I am still looking to learn Shadow Land yet this month. I really like both of these songs!
