mheidenMember@rpina61- regarding strings, I think I like the sound of the “take 2” strings best.
What type of strings did you use in each?November 20, 2018 at 3:36 pm in reply to: Participate in the November 2018 Member Challenge – WIN Skype Lesson w/ Taimane! #20264
mheidenMemberThanks Kanni! Yes, I’m getting used to it and it feels much better. I wanted to give the strings a fair chance, so I’m keeping them for now. It’s taken me about a month to feel comfortable with it though. I definitely could have used more time with this song, but I know this week will fly by and I’m out the last week of the month.
I bet you can remember Moon….let’s commit to learning it by the end of the year! It’s too beautiful not to play

mheidenMemberI AM A PREMIUM MEMBER
This is my submission for November; La Gitanita.
I really wanted to learn Moon (and still will)….my work travel in November is about half the month, so Moon wasn’t possible. I started to learn La Gitanita last week and learned Melody C completely just yesterday. This took quite a few takes- seems rasqueado is tough to do after so long!
mheidenMemberI have a few Ukulele’s and they are all tenor; I’ve bought them all online. I have found that I can choose the wood and sound from videos (alot of videos though). The part that I found more challenging is the feel of the neck. I definitely have grown into the ukes I have, but still gravitate to one in particular because of how it feels to hold it. So if you are able to see anything live to understand your preferences, that would help. Even if you can’t see the ones you are considering…you can get an idea of the specifics you like then ask…weather it’s Mike or Mim- I’m sure they are all helpful. Good Luck!

mheidenMemberThat was great @rpina! I enjoyed that

mheidenMemberThat sounds exciting! We are going to see him in Napa, CA on December 6th. I can’t wait. Looking forward to seeing how you like the uke his brother makes. I’ve seen it on his site.
mheidenMemberThis is great Lisa! Very cool that you wrote your own piece.
I can’t wait to do an original piece as well!
mheidenMemberHi Katie,
I loved the lesson and really enjoy hearing singing with some of the songs. I can’t sing, but it’s great to have it in the lessons. Looking forward to more!
mheidenMember@cinichol Haha Cindy! It’s my favorite. That’s the uke I brought to Santa Barbara for Brandi and the Twins to sign! Allegro was a special occasion. It’s my “peace in 20 languages” representative of Brandi and music.

mheidenMember@lisadmh – you should totally do Moon. You’re already on page 2….I could listen to that song all day long…..
mheidenMemberhaha…..I don’t know what that means either…but the strings are D’addario. I was surprised when I read that insert as I was expecting the Ko’alou. Who knows!
mheidenMemberYes, I have 3 ukes that had a set up (2 low G); this one feels a bit lower in places. I’m glad you had the muting issue as well. I’m sure it’s just time. What is funny….how you describe fluorocarbons sounds like how I describe Aquila’s….the fluorocarbons seem much more rigid and they really beat up my fingers! LOL. When I switch back to my other uke, everything seems easier.
I’ll keep you posted.
mheidenMemberThanks Kanni and Kayleigh– I appreciate your feedback. I’ll give it some more time.
Maybe it’s just me, but I feel like the action is too low and I’m getting alot of dead notes. Like on Etude 13, the hammer-on from fret 3 to 2 barely makes a sound. On St. James Infirmary, the part on fret 7,8,9 with the pinky on 10 for 1 note…I can’t even hit the string with my pinky…it seems like it sits close to the edge or something. I’ve been really frustrated. Or just basic things, I am getting dead notes- maybe I’m not holding the strings down hard enough…I don’t know.*the wound C is much thicker than the low G wound strings on my low G ukes.
mheidenMemberHi Helen,
I take longer to learn the songs initially, but I learn it all from the video.
I do print the tab out and reference it, but play bar by bar in pieces until I go through all of it. From there it is repetition. I’ve only been a member since June, but I regularly play the songs I’ve learned to keep a flow going. Seems when I forget, I pull out the music and look to figure it out. -
