olphartMemberI’m impressed, Tess
olphartMemberThis arrangement is so Andrewesk. It would make a great lesson piece.

olphartMemberHi Andrew, it looks like this challenge is exactly what I need…back to the basics. I think I was rushing things a bit.
Anyway I have a question about Aura Lee. Is there any way to get that second last note to keep ringing a bit while we transition to the final chord? It sounds a bit “chopped” to me.
Maybe form the chord after the G, then play F on the 3rd string 5th fret, hold for the beat then strum?-

olphartMemberThanks for the encouragement Andrew. I think I’m just temporarily stuck on a plateau.
I took pairs of bars and repeated them over and over til they sounded right, then went on to the next. By the time I got back to the first set I was back to square one… It got so that I could play individual parts just fine, but when it came to putting them together, making the transitions was difficult. That chorus, for some reason was a huge challenge. I never did get it close to right until I left out the extra notes and even then…
I started to make a little progress when I began to memorize the whole thing like I did with the Mountain King but by then it was too late.I think I may have shot myself in the foot as well by flipping back and forth between the bari and the tenor…my fingers kept getting confused LOL
What bothers me is the amount of time I spent practicing vs the progress made. It looks like I spent very little on it, but I did practice at least a half hour a day most days, sometimes more.

olphartMemberWell, my thumb is much better. I wish I could say the same for my playing. It’s still pretty dismal, but I’ve run out of time and it just isn’t getting any better. I must be on a plateau or something. I did much better with In The Hall of the Mountain King
Anyway, here it is:

olphartMemberFound a new way to hammer on! …using a real hammer applied to my left thumb! OUCH! It makes my left hand work kinda hurtful, to say nothing of the quality of the playing…. that’s my excuse and I’m gonna stick to it.
Actually finding this one harder to get right than the Mountain King.Video coming soon. I’ll give the thumb another day to heal then go for it.

olphartMemberhey Jakey, that’s better than I’m doing at the moment! I can’t believe i’m having more trouble with this than I did with the Mountain King!

olphartMemberJust had to comment Andrew, that these challenges are particularly good for people like me.
I’ve only been playing for about 4 months and I’ve somehow managed to collect over 200 song tabs, and worked on at least 30 or 40 so far. I’ve realized that I really should focus on a few and the challenges make me focus on just one.
I do play around in my collection with different techniques, genres and so on, but most of my energy is focussed on the challenge.
Thanx!!(Maybe I’m ADHD…Look!Squirrel!!)
olphartMemberAndrew,
I think the Hukilau song would make a good beginner lesson, particularly if you added your special touch to it.June 2, 2017 at 2:36 pm in reply to: Ask Me ANY Ukulele Question for Chance to WIN a Kala Uke #11857
olphartMemberWould you recommend restringing a baritone uke to reentrant GCEA? I do have a background w/ guitar, and I have a baritone, ( I LOVE my bari ), but when playing ukulele tunes on it I find myself inadvertently using uke shapes for the bari chords, usually with unpleasant results. When I use uke shapes or bari shapes for all the chords in a tune, it works fine, just changes the key, but slipping in a C when a G is needed is just wrong. 8^)

olphartMemberThanks Andrew, BTW, for those who may be wondering why it sounds lower, that’s a baritone uke tuned to DGBE, so while the fingering and arrangement is the same, the notes are a 5th(?) lower. It also requires that the open 4th string D in DCEA tuning moves to fret 3 on string 2.
Hopefully, I can clean it up and play it better next timeMay 20, 2017 at 3:41 pm in reply to: Participate in the May 2017 Member Challenge – Classical Ukulele Challenge #11647
