I’m going to be working on finger style playing, aiming for 4 finger approach and particular attention to my keeping that pedal note going. I plan to get a little better control of my thumb as well. It seems to want to play strings 3 as well as string 4. Fine for 3 finger, but I want 4 finger playing this time.

The piece I’m working on is Ode to Joy and I’ll give it 10 minutes a day, dividing the 3 melodies into weeks 1, 2, and 3 respectively, but adding the previous week’s melody each time. I plan to show my progress and the end of each week.

Week 4 will be devoted to trying to present a performance that satisfies me.

How about an Andrewesque version of St Louis Blues?

leahwoosley, that looks like the same model Pono as mine..How are yo liking it? I love sound of mine, but I think it needs a setup, because it feels “tight”…I get sore fingers much faster on the Pono than on my Kala

Here is my submission. I’m not happy with it, but it’s been a crazy month and I ran out of time.

Like everyone else, I am amazed at your virtuosity!
My question is a little prosaic, (kinda like my playing)…What strings do you favour for your ukes?

Finally! I recorded this just under the wire. Just had so much other stuff going on…finally got my plane in the air after solving some horrendous ground handling problems, and my instruments kept crapping out on me. Enough excuses…
    For this challenge:
Song choice… too basic… by the time I had worked on it for a couple of weeks, I never wanted to hear it again. This tune shouldn’t take a month to learn
Practice schedule…for me, the 5 – 10 minutes per day was ok, but I think i would have done better with a more aggressive schedule. I have made more progress on more difficult material in less time..I must like the pressure. *grin*
The back beat..yes that came much more easily after a week or so
The performance……..Welll…let’s just say I’m not quite ready to play the Wawa Hotel.

Making ok progress on the backbeat now that my social finger has fully recovered from its bandsaw attack. It was pretty sensitive to pressure for a while even after the cut healed. Of course it would help if I didn’t keep stabbing my other fingers with sharp aluminum burrs (building an airplane, very hard on fingers and devastating to fingernails). 8^)
Anyway, I’ve been applying it to the 12 Bar Blues, and it’s coming along nicely. I’ll video it once I’m happy with the performance.

This challenge is a good one for me, because I’m at the stage where I’ve become very unfocussed, just playing with many different songs and techniques, not getting good with any of them. To focus on one thing in a disciplined way would be smart.

I’m going to follow your suggestion for the technique to work on; the back beat/slap.
At this point, I’ve messed with it a couple of times, but it’s still at the strum, pause, slap, pluck, pause, pick, change chord, repeat phase, thinking about where and what to do next.

I’m going to put 10 minutes/day into just that technique, and when it works easily without having to stop and think about it, I’ll apply it to the 12 bar blues that you mentioned.

By the end of the month, I hope to play the 12 bar blues cleanly, with the back beat, up to tempo at a level that I’d play in performance at my local “pickin’ night” gathering

I just got a new (to me), uke last week! What a sweet instrument
I’ve been working pretty hard trying to improve my playing and was making ok progress. I decided that if I was going to be that serious, I deserved a really good instrument. Not that my Kala tenor and Cordoba bari aren’t pretty good, but…. Long story shorter, I got a Pono MTSHC….tenor, cedar top, cutaway for a decent, but still outrageous price. The problem is that now I have no excuses. I can’t blame the instrument for lousy music
Well, yes I do..now. The “social” finger on my fretting hand lost a run in with a band saw this morning…sounds much worse than it is..just cut into the tip and the nail a bit, but it sure is sore, and I think it ruined my callus. LOL. I’ll probably be able to fret with it in a week or so.
It’s really HARD to play without that finger!!

Here’s a pic of my new uke

Yup, hard fer sher, but I was up for until I started getting pain in my forearm when fretting. Took a day off playing and it improved, but I think I’d better take it easy.
I’m still going to work on Waimanolo Blues, but at a VERY relaxed pace..just for the learning. Doing the first 4 bars for now and that’ll do for a while.
    Uke on!

I finally got it recorded without it being too much of a clusterflub. It’s been a crazy month, so not nearly as much practice as I would have liked, but here it is:

I just found “Misty” for the baritone uke… Creates a kind of soft reflective mood.
I think it would make a great lesson for re entrant as well.

Just a quick question Andrew. Bar 4 on the tab download shows F for 2 then open 3 for 2, but the tab playalong and your playing just has F for 4. I just ignore it and play by the tab download. figuring that it doesn’t really matter that much. Any particular reason? I’ve noticed this on the other challenges as well.
