robinboydParticipantHi Lisa,
I think I can answer this. I do it all the time. Yes, sing it an octave low. A good example is when I used a capo for Angels We Have Heard on High. I assure you, I was not singing higher than Katie!
Also, I don’t recommend putting a capo on a soprano, not because it necessarily affects the sound, but just because you end up running out of fretboard to play on.

robinboydParticipantThanks Andrew. Did you mean this one?
I miss that jumper! I wore holes through the elbows.

robinboydParticipantOh no! I just went to learn Zelda’s Lullaby and found that my only uke with enough frets is currently strung with a low G. Now I really want to win that uke!
Edit: On second thought, I think I can make it work for low G

robinboydParticipantI thought I’d get this one out of the way early because I already sort of knew it, but I also wanted to fix a few things from my previous entry of this song in one of the challenges.
Last time I entered this piece in a challenge, I had not yet got premium membership, so I had to work out the second half on my own. At the time, Andrew correctly noted that I was missing half a measure. With access to the tabs, etc., that one was easy to fix. I also wanted to nail the timing of this a bit better than last time as Andrew has been picking on that a bit over the last few months. Specifically, the length of time to do the scratchy bits really threw me. I made sure that I noted the length of each one (because the second is longer than the first) and I played along with the tab viewer a bit. The final video was just me counting it out in my head, so it’s not perfect. I even had some fluctuation in speed in the other bits, but at least I’m aware of it, I suppose.
Also, the pull-offs are not as clean as I would like in this take, but I was managing them okay in practice.

robinboydParticipantCongrats Josip!
@jinajupiter – I must have taken my lead from the second chorus. That’s interesting. I’ll have to have another listen before I attempt it again.July 4, 2019 at 8:57 am in reply to: Participate in the June 2019 Member Challenge – LAST Chance to WIN a Kanile’a! #28668
robinboydParticipant@jinajupiter – the way I interpret the lyrics is that right now, Jack has too many things to do and he’s stressed, but if he got to sit beneath the mango tree with his love, he wouldn’t have so many things to do and he’d relax.

robinboydParticipantThanks @gaberdude. That’s what I was aiming for, but at the same time I was really disappointed with what I ended up with. I think I’ll put it aside for a while and revisit it in a few months.

robinboydParticipantHey @gaberdude, that’s a really interesting point about singing the E with the F chord. I was actually singing a C for the first 3 lines of the chorus and switched to E for the 4th line, which you just sung as “yeah.” I see that Katie was singing an E, though, so yes, I suppose I found it very tricky.

robinboydParticipantGood luck with the draw everyone. It will be at 2am here, so I’ll catch up in the morning.

robinboydParticipantThis is an interesting one for me because I already have one of the options half memorised. I think I might just play that one and work on Zelda’s Lullaby for the rest of the month. It feels like a bit of a cop-out, but there are a few non-challenge songs that I really want to learn.
robinboydParticipantI can hear the influence of Taimane’s Moon in this, but it’s not derivative at all. It’s really pretty. I like everyone’s suggestions so far and all I can say is that something along those lines would be very appropriate.
robinboydParticipantI play my concerts (one strung high g and one strung low g) about 80% of the time, but I like having the tenor for variety. Each one definitely has its advantages.
robinboydParticipantHi Anirbaf
My wife and I own a 1 soprano, 2 concerts, 1 tenor, and a guitalele. Excluding the guitalele, I prefer concerts and my wife prefers sopranos.
The downsides of the soprano are that my fingers get cramped on the fretboard, there aren’t enough frets to play everything I want to play, and they are a bit quiet. They produce a wonderfully plinky Hawaiian tone though, and my wife doesn’t find the fretboard cramped at all. That’s just me.
I find the concert fretboard most comfortable and there are usually enough frets as long as I don’t use a capo. They are still a bit quieter than the tenor, but that isn’t usually an issue. My wife finds the concert fretboards a bit of a stretch though. The tone is a happy medium between the soprano and the tenor.
Both my wife and I struggle to play stretch chords on the tenor. The tone is really resonant, though, almost like a guitar. It’s great for if I want to play really high up the fretboard or if I need volume.
I hope that helped.

robinboydParticipantThanks Andrew. I’ll look at that video when I can.
I think what you were seeing was the culmination of hours of frustration trying to record in the evening, so all the rhythm and tempo just went out the window. I’ll see if I can get a more relaxed recording done when I get back.
Also, as always, I forgot to say I AM A PREMIUM MEMBER.

robinboydParticipantHi Jina,
Yeah, the D shape was something that I asked Andrew about before I did it.
When you are asking about the 4th note, I assume you are talking about the verses? In that case, yes, I’m plucking it, but it isn’t very apparent and I miss it half the time. I decided that rather than tapping the fretboard, I am more comfortable chunking to get the percussive sound, so I replaced the tap with a chunk. The trouble with that is that I end up with my hand out of position for the 4th beat, so rather than plucking with 2 fingers, I’m strumming up with the index, but missing the C and G strings. I hope that makes sense.
I know I took a few liberties with this arrangement. I hope that’s OK.
