As we enter the second half of the year, I thought it would be great to take a step back and reflect on the first 6 months of lessons. This also provides a great opportunity to get feedback from everyone, so that I can tailor the next 6 months of lessons to reflect what you want to learn.

In the video above, I recap the last 6 months of lessons and share my plans for the next 6 months. If you are short on time, I will list the highlights below (video jump guide will be in parentheses).

    2 BIG Announcements (0:25)

    A) Kanile’a Endorsement – I am beyond thrilled to announce that I have officially been endorsed by Kanile’a Ukulele! Stay tuned as we’ll be teaming up to bring some exciting things to the RC101 community!

    B) RC101 Features OVER 250 Ukulele Lessons – We crossed 250 lessons a couple weeks ago! If you are new to RC101, click HERE to learn more about our curriculum.

6 Month Lessons Recap [Janruary – June] (1:42)

    A) 26 Lessons Have Been Released This Year!

I have added every lesson we have released this year in THIS YOUTUBE PLAYLIST.

    – 2 Technique Lessons (Vibrato & Drum-Like Rhythm)
    – 1 Concept Lesson (EP009)
    Lightning Round #2
    – 20 Songs, spanning multiple genres: flamenco, eastern, bluegrass, jazz, opera, classical, pop, classic rock, blues, traditional.

This year’s song lessons where developed with the intermediate player in mind. This decision was made due to the feedback I received in our December 2017 survey.

What’s Coming Over The Next 6 Months? (3:32)

    A) More Beginner Songs & Lessons – Such as, Fingerpicking Etude #13.

    B) Low G Lessons – Expect to see Low G lessons beginning mid October.

    C) NEW Course – The course will be on learning to read standard notation. It will be tailored for Low G ukulele, but I will make sure that at least 3/4ths of the course is applicable for re-entrant tuned ukulele. Learning to read is the BEST way to improve your understanding of rhythm and timing. Expect to see this course towards the end of the year.

    D) Favorites Feature – The ability to bookmark lessons, or “add to favorites”, is coming! You’ll be able to compile an easy to access list of all the lessons you are working on! This will be integrated into the site soon and I will make a short video tutorial on how to use it.

    Possible Upcoming Lessons (7:25)

    A) U-Bass Course – We may release a “jumpstart” U-Bass Course. It will be similar to our Beginner Ukulele Course, but much more condensed. Please let me know if this is something you are interested in.

    B) Master Course – I am in talks with a well-known ukulele player that may be stopping by to create a micro course that will center around teaching you one specific technique. Things are currently up in the air as to if this will happen, but I should know more by Fall and will update everyone.

    C) Your Feedback – I’d love to hear from you! Let me know what you would like to see in the next 6 months, but please keep it constructive and discussion-based (no song requests).

A U-Bass course sounds great, and I’m looking forward to the Low-g lessons. I like your reentrant arrangements so much that I do get out my high g uke to play them but I’d really love to see arrangements to play on my Clara (my favorite uke). I like variety, so don’t have any other suggestions.

I’m yet in the Basic but my time will open up for more participation in September. I just want to vote for low G lessons as I have re-strung my uke with a low G.

Amost every song you put out I want to learn, but lack the talent to keep up.
Takes me a long time….when you are 80 your slow. However, if you could put out some lessons in the style
of the attached I could learn a new song much faster.

    Regards,

U-Bass Course sounds terrific! I have U-Bass but really haven’t figured out what to do with it yet.
Also will love the low G lessons. Would like to see some Baritone lessons if possible.
Thanks for your great web site!

Hi Teach! Thanks for all the hard work you do!

I don’t own a low G ukulele but I do want one and I know I’ll get one someday. BUT I play my baritone regularly and I have the option to attempt your low G lessons using my baritone (I already understand the tuning differences).

It was your “tv, movie, and video game” lessons that originally attracted me to your website. I always have a lot of fun playing popular tunes like these I also love the pop songs (like la bamba and stand by me) and would love to see more of them. That said, I’m usually content with the lessons you’ve been providing. Since I started practicing your original etudes and classical stuff I notice that I’m definitely learning new skills. Keep up the good work!

For me, yes to low g. I have my new uke here and nothing to play.

No to u bass. Not on my list.

Absolutely to reading standard notation. For sure! Very exiting.

Love the beginner songs. I can work through intermediate but it’s nice to have some I can pick up quickly.

More indie/ alternative would be awesome.

I love everything you do around here. Looking forward to the next 6 months!!

    Hi Andrew,

I would like to learn different things (right now I finished the beginner course):

some not so hard songs rock/pop/folk/blues… where I can sing a little (I know that your site is more about pure playing) but some of the audio examples of pop songs were not my style because they were to far away from the original (for me).

    low-g ukulele

    everything about notation

    – right now I just play what you show in the videos but I can’t do anything with this knowledge. I would like to learn what I can do with that stuff (hope you can understand).

    – at the moment I don’t have any interest in u-bass.

I’m really excited what will come up in the future and love your site.

    Not interexted in ubass

I cant think of anything I want that you havent already mentioned…looking forward to low g arrangements…and reading standard notation…though I have been playing almost a year…and have learned your fantastic interpretation of canon in d…I still consider myself a beginner…and look forward to those lessons as well…you have inspired me to go beyond just strumming…but I do fi nd it belittling when you mention strumming the same chords over and over…and then rolling your eyes…I do like just strumming sometimes…it makes me relax and have fun and sometimes be a bit inventive or creative…or lead me to a new picking pattern…but I am grateful for all your hard work professor Andrew…enjoy your vacation…you deserve it

Hey Sammy, sorry if it came across that way. That was never my intention.

    Hi Andrew,

More beginner friendly to newer intermediate chord melody solos would be great! Thanks for all you do.

Can I request Barre chord tips and Barre chord exercise?
I watched tutorial video about barre chord, but everyone has different opinion on that.

I’ve tried various methods of playing barre chords, but I’m worried my approach might not be the best one.

And I’m looking forward to the Low-G lessons! 🙂

Tried low G and abandoned it but am somewhat interested in learning that. More beginner songs are welcomed. Also pop/indie/folk. Really like your classical arrangements. Bar chords are difficult for me as I have small hands. Currently learning Havana and find it rather challenging because of the bar chords. I need more help with chucking. I have memorized every song I have learned which is only about 4. I can Play Red is the Rose reasonably comfortably. Even Our First Song makes me sound good and gives me a sense of accomplishment. Love the idea of Favourites.
Your lessons are wonderful Andrew. You are a great musician and teacher. I am not surprised you were endorsed by Kanilea

Absolutely LOVE everything about the lessons you have designed for us so far — in particular, the focus on technique and that for each song, your focus is not on the song itself (LOVE the fingerpicking-heavy arrangements) but on applying certain techniques, and the range of music genres, too — so more of the same, please (especially spanish guitar :-P)! This is the reason RC101 stands out for me, and I think the only reason why I feel like I am making progress and sticking to it instead of giving up in frustration that I just can’t play like I would like to because I feel like I’m learning something more than just strumming along.

low-G lessons: It would be cool, if you have low-G lessons to have a parallel re-entrant tuning version, too? So, non low-G uke players can take advantage of the lessons, too 🙂

standard notation: YES! So I guess I would be interested in Part 2 of the standard notation reading lesson, which would be for me, some exercises in sight reading. I still haven’t worked on my goal of learning the fretboard and breaking out of 1st position (in terms of knowing what notes I’m playing). Which brings me to a suggestion for annotations in the video lessons — dunno if it’s the same for others but it would help me if you kept all the chords (and maybe even the chord chart) on the side of the video longer, say, for each group of measures you are explaining. So far in the small handful of lessons I’ve gone through, you show the chord charts for a few seconds at the beginning when you introduce where the chord appears in the measure. Having the array of chords would let me go through your lessons a little bit more efficiently (I’m rewinding a lot, trying to reconstruct what frets etc). I know it’s in the tabs, and maybe I should just play along with videos and your tabs…but what I’m finding myself doing is only watching the videos so I can also see your fingering and to get me to memorize pieces, and by the time I get to SoundSlice, I’ve already memorized it and am concentrating on trying to slowly get myself up to your playing speed. Just a thought. Maybe the others don’t find this useful because they always learn along with the tabs…

ideas for other lessons: I would also love lessons on the nitty gritty/refining certain techniques (now that you can kind of do it some of the time, how to do it better/so you get it most of the time :-P), and maybe also how you choose fingerings/what positions to play what where.

Awesome for Kanilea!! Not surprised as well cos you rock! Have a great vacation!

    And thank you!!!!
    gina
