1481632_mParticipantFor this month’s challenge I will be revisiting “Mad World” from June of 2024. This time around I will work on memorizing the piece and while learning it playing it all the way through. Last time I only practiced in parts so when I went to record I wasn’t able to play it smoothly all together. I will also focus on learning the song by playing it very very slowly. Using this technique has been much more efficient with learning. I want to try using the chord roll technique that I started learning in the challenge from last month in this song.

1481632_mParticipantHello 👋,
Congratulations everyone on all these great performances. It’s cool to see the different pieces everyone’s selected and put their spin on. Very inspiring.
Here is my submission for this month. I chose “Blue Skies.” I will say it’s been fun to learn the “chord roll”, not sure if that’s the technical term, used in a couple of the measures. I look forward to getting the song up to a quicker tempo as I learn the technique a bit more.

1481632_mParticipantHello,
For this month’s challenge I am working on the clawhammer technique. I’ve worked on it in the past a bit, but never consistently enough to learn it.
I have a little gem banjolele I would like to be able to play clawhammer on. In the future, I want to learn how arrange the song “Jambalaya (on the Bayou)” by Hank Williams in clawhammer for the banjolele. I think I’ll be well on my way with this challenge.
Execution:
I am working on the clawhammer technique using the book “The Wonderful World of Clawhammer Ukulele” by Christopher Davis-Shannon, who also teaches here on Rockclass101.I will work through the techniques with each accompanying exercise for the melody note, bum ditty, chord scale, and double thumb.
My current level is I am starting over from the beginning to make sure I learn it correctly and spend enough time at each section to really understand each part of the technique.
My long term goal is to learn the fundamentals proficiently to be able to apply them to songs in the future and develop the skill.
My goal for this challenge is to be able to play the “A Tisket A Tasket” the end of each technique section in part one of the book through the double thumb section.
My practice schedule is to practice 5 times a week.
Application:
I will apply what I learn in the clawhammer technique to the “A Tisket A Tasket” song exercises at the end of each section in part One of the book through double thumb.Evaluation:
The first week I spent learning the how to strike the melody notes in the claw shape. I learned the rhythm of the bum ditty pattern, and the c major scale.Week two I will learn how to add the brush stroke into the bum ditty pattern. I will learn “A Tisket A Tasket” with the bum ditty rhythm.
Week three I will work on the double thumb technique. I will learn “A Tisket A Tasket” with double thumb.
Week four I will continue working on the techniques I have learned.
To evaluate I will record the “A Tisket A Tasket” song exercise for the melody note, bum ditty, and double thumb.
Best,
Megan-

1481632_mParticipantHere is my entry for this month’s challenge. I had a nice time learning this piece and look forward to exploring it more. I want to continue learning about sustain and carry out the sound longer as I get the shapes a bit more under my fingers.
Thank you Rockclass101 for hosting these challenges. I first joined in February and am excited to continue learning about the ukulele and fingerstyle playing. You have created a great community of instructors and students.

1481632_mParticipantHello Everyone,
This month I started out learning the Blues Bars Etude and got stuck on the hammer ons and pull offs section. So about halfway through the month I switched to the Etude no. 3. I enjoyed both, and am submitting the Etude no. 3 for this challenge. Congratulations to everyone on their progress this month with their ukulele playing. Great work.

1481632_mParticipantHello,
Here is my submission for this month’s challenge, “Travis Picking Etude – ML023.” I didn’t have as much time to practice as I would have liked, but it was a fun song to learn about the Travis picking technique. Thanks for hosting the monthly challenges.

1481632_mParticipantHere is my submission for “Mad World.” I realized too late in the month that being able to play the song in parts is not the same thing as being able to play the song through in its entirety. The recording is rough, but I did manage to memorize most of the song in the last three days of the month. So now I’m hoping to be able to put the parts together and play them smoothly in the future. It’s hard to play when you know you are recording yourself. Thanks for making the monthly challenges, I’m learning a lot.

1481632_mParticipantHere is my recording of “Dream a Little Dream of Me.” I was initially intimidated by the barre chords and was quite surprised to see they were indeed possible to play with practice. This song has been exciting to learn and see growth over the month. I’m looking forward to continuing to improve on this song and apply what I’ve learned with the barre chords to future songs.

1481632_mParticipantHere is my recording of Etude no 13. I forgot to slow down at the ending, but will make note to do so in the future. I’m going to keep working on it. This was my first time correctly playing a barre chord, in the past I’ve always just used extra fingers. So now I’m excited to try to learn more. Thanks for the monthly challenges.

1481632_mParticipantHere is my final attempt at this months challenge after the comments from @Andrew. Thank you for the feedback and explanation. I tried to make the strumming more in time with the picking and pay more attention to how I ended the song.
I enjoyed learning how to move up and down the fretboard and mute a string while strumming. I am excited to continue learning. It’s great to see all the performances. Great job everyone.
