kanae926ParticipantSteven Warren has a short cover of Green Day’s Wake Me Up When September Ends and Shallow (from the movie, A Star is Born) on his YouTube channel. Can we get him to make tutorials out of them? 🙂

kanae926ParticipantDang, it’s only the second day and already, there are two great submissions to kick off the month. Those are some tough acts to follow!
Awesome playing, Nathalie! Sara, we didn’t know you could sing! So lovely! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Hats off to both of you.
kanae926ParticipantThat’s normal for new strings to need frequent tuning before they become stable. It usually takes a week or two of constant tuning before they’re properly stretched and it’s normal if you can’t even get through one song before they start going out of tune at first.
kanae926ParticipantSounds right to me. 🤷🏻♀️
If it wasn’t the right octave, the strings wouldn’t be at the right tension. You wouldn’t be able to string it too high because they would likely break before you got to an octave higher, and if you had it too low, you’d know from the floppiness of the tension.
Standard tuning should be G4-C4-E4-A4. Some chromatic tuners might show the octave. Also remember to have it on 440 HZ (standard pitch).
kanae926ParticipantSmudge, what are you using to record video?
Here’s one to use with a camera or phone (headphone jack): https://smile.amazon.com/Rode-VideoMicro-Compact-Camera-Microphone/dp/B015R0IQGW
Here’s one if you want to plug into a computer (USB connection): https://www.amazon.com/Blue-Snowball-Microphone-Textured-White/dp/B000EOPQ7E

kanae926ParticipantWelcome, Cat! There’s a ton of variety on RC101, but the funnest are joining the monthly challenges. I love that you get personal feedback on your playing. It’s so helpful to know what we’re doing right or what we can do to improve.
Have fun exploring! Hope to see you post some of what you’re learning. 🙂
Many of us have UAS here and there are quite a few who have that Nova U. Nice acquisition – it’s very popular for good reason. So, what’s your first uke?
kanae926ParticipantEverything about this so cool – audibly and visually. The video editor did an awesome job. Thanks for sharing! Loved it.
kanae926ParticipantThis song always reminds me of I Love Lucy (that’s the only place I know it from). I used to watch all the episodes on reruns when I was a kid.
Haha, thanks for sharing this fun video. Very enjoyable. 😀

kanae926ParticipantI don’t like the feel and sound of wound low G either, so I use Living Water all fluorocarbon low G set.

kanae926ParticipantI think YouTube was messed up and there were some questions in the chat that got missed.
My two questions I’d posted there:
1. Do you have a favorite Low G string brand/type? What’s on your Mo’bettah?
2. Let’s talk about that wound C…does it sound different than an unwound C? I’ve always wondered why some brands have a wound C as their default set. Thanks for another great live lesson, Matt!

kanae926ParticipantQiuyan, did you happen to submit more than one link in your post? If you did, it might be waiting for an admin (Andrew) to release it. Stating you’re a premium member was only necessary for the 3-month Kanile’a giveaway that just ended.
kanae926ParticipantIf you give him criteria of what you’re looking for, he’ll definitely be able to give you comparable ukes in a similar price range to help you can make an informed decision (unless you’re hard set on that Ohana). In any case, if they carry it, you know it’ll be a quality uke and will come set up for optimal playability.
Good luck!
kanae926ParticipantMike at Uke Republic will be able to answer any of the questions you may have and give you his professional opinion. If you want to hear it, maybe he’d be willing to do a video call? Email him at [email protected] and tell him you’re with Rock Class 101. I’ve emailed him before with similar questions and he’s super friendly and helpful!
kanae926ParticipantBad intonation up the neck could be attributed to needing a setup. It’s possible that the action is too high. Or the issue could be specific to the type of strings – some sets are thicker than others and sit too high in the nut slots which could pull a string to go sharp when fretted.
I just got a set of D’Addario titaniums and they are fat fluorocarbons that can be in tune in the open position but are immediately sharp when fretted (especially the C string, the fattest one). For reference, I’ve attached the D’Addario specs compared to Worth Browns.
kanae926ParticipantBecky, here’s a chord namer for ukulele: https://ukebuddy.com/chord-namer
