Great job Rickey! Gracie sounds fabulous in your hands. How do you like her?

Smudge, sounds good! That song is on my wish list for sure. Love it.

Good challenge. Congrats on two years. I’ve been here since challenge #2, joined in the last couple of days of challenge #1.

Great uke too. I have a soprano islander andlove it. Concert size is missing from my collection, just sayin!

I commit to Bourée without tabs, no cheating.

Strings update in case anyone encounters a similar problem.

I flipped the E and A and still couldn’t tune the A. It was A that was wrong and it was by typing E here that I realized I had perhaps flipped then. But fixing didn’t help, so I went back to aquila for just the A and it tunes fine.

I think the pack might have contained two E strings. They do look the same. So now I have mismatched strings, but a working uke and a low G I like. Win some and lose some!

I just got some fluorcarbon low G strings and I can already tell I’m going to like them better than the boomy loud wound G aquilas.

    That is the good news.

The bad news is as I string them on, the E string keeps clicking and going back to way low out of tune. I can’t tune it.

I think my tuner is broken??

Edit: what happens if you accidentally reverse the E and A strings? Maybe I did that?

Here’s my song. It’s called A Beautiful Life, for the featured kitty cat, who’s doing much better for the moment but is on borrowed time.

I feel like I’ve learned so much on this one. It’s all using things I’ve learned here at RC101. Of course it’s not perfect, but…

    1. I wrote it. I’m new at this, but I actually wrote it.
    2. I got the Guitar Pro app and wrote it up, with legitimate 4/4 time and tabs and and on screen tab viewer and everything.
    3. I’ve got some vibrato in there for the first time.
    4. It’s loaded with bar chords and was a workout.
    5. Despite not having a great recording (my new mic is noisy), I swear I actually have some dynamics going on.
    6. I’m mostly muting out some unwanted string noise. I haven’t got it all, but some. That’s new for me.
    7. I found C, E7, F, and G7 at multiple places on the neck. I have to keep doing this sort of thing to learn more chords all over the place.

Anyway, I hope you like it!

Thanks gahanby! My fan is awaiting my news releases, lol. It is too much fun, and I can’t believe I’m actually writing my own songs. The newest one is for low G and includes a harmonic, two goals I had.

    Practice, practice, tweak, practice.

Great job imminside and sprint! You’ve both put some good work into this. And both are future goals for me.

Kanae, that’s a good speed for that song. I can play it at about 70. Good thing it still sounds good slow, but it’s not allegro with me!

My progress report: I’m feeling good about my song and don’t know what else to do to improve it. I’m just waiting for my new mic to see if I can get a slightly better recording. So, I was messing around last night and I seem to have written another song, oops! It’s got some tough chord changes in it (I usually curse Andrew for those but this time it’s my own fault!! The music requires it. ) so I can’t yet execute it well, but it’s pretty and was so much easier to write with my new guitar pro app. I just need to remember some nuances that the cheap app won’t let me add. Maybe I’ll get that one performable by the end of the month. We’ll see how many tweaks I make to the song between now and then.

Great updates folks. It’s fun to see what progress you’re making.

Ukuon, lol on Tiny. How did you keep a straight face? Good concentration.

I think I managed to remove the hiss. This had promise.

I did order a Mic. It’s way too easy to be able to order things online without even pulling out a credit card. Lol. It was cheap, so no great loss if it doesn’t work. Stay tuned…

Recording directly in wave pad gives me dynamics at last! I lose video of course. I’m not sure what to do with that.

Hmm. I downloaded the app and I see I have another learning curve ashead of me. I have no idea what I’m doing. The cleanup button made me hopeful, but I don’t know what most of the options mean and I still have the hiss. Will play around more.

Yes, I’ve tried with the tablet and I get a little hint of dynamics but the whole sound is muffled. Crappy microphone I guess.

Thanks for the tips Team Uke!

I’m on an Android phone and Android tablet entirely these days. I haven’t had need of a full laptop in a couple of years so didn’t replace my old one when it died. I’m not sure a laptop would record any cleaner than a phone?

A laptop would give me more software options, but it seems silly to buy all that stuff for my little amateur playing. I could put that money toward a new uke, lol.

Audacity looks interesting, but again not for Android. I downloaded a bunch of apps last night and none of them did anything noticeable.

I’m so tempted on a little microphone as a first step but I don’t know how much it’ll help. I suspect if I ask at the music store they’ll try to sell me hundreds in equipment, plus tell me I need a laptop. All I want at this stage is to soften the recording so I can hear dynamics and it doesn’t always sounds like I’m plucking strings hard enough to break them.

Thanks for the thoughts, folks. Much food for thought.

After some googling, I think this isn’t a thing. I think the problem is the microphone in my phone. I need a condenser mic?

I don’t want to pay a couple hundred dollars for posting videos on RC101, but anyone know if the cheap mics are worth it? I might consider something like this. Do I just plug into my phone and record as usual but with less clunky sound?
