lisadmhParticipantOk, so I lose that bet. π
In that case, I’ll second Kay’s request for death cab for cutie. I love that band and that song.
DCFC is a close second to Mahler in my books, lol.
Lovely horn solo chaz!
lisadmhParticipantSo, I have a friend who’s a fancy professional orchestral director, and while he’s a good sport, he doesn’t appreciate the full glory of the uke compared to his kind of stringed instruments. He’s insisting that Gustav Mahler could not be done on a uke.
If you could find a smidgen of something from a Mahler symphony and arrange for uke, I’ll win a bet. He rejects the frere jacques intro to movement 3 of symphony 1.
I know it’s a long shot, but I had to let you know of the challenge. π

lisadmhParticipantThanks Andrew. I working on memorizing but it is a long song. I can play all the bars individually without the sheets, and some extended stretches, but I can’t seem to remember what section comes next, when. Will continue trying as it definitely sounds better when I’m not focused on the sheets.
As for sustaining, yes, sounds better when you sustain the notes more, but how does one do that?

lisadmhParticipantAccountability time. I’ve been working on that four string pluck. My application in this month’s challenge song is not good, but I still have too much to think about on that one. Here it is I the easier song. I played the whole song rather than just the part I question because that’s more fun for me. π
I think I’m bouncing around a lot less but I still don’t get a clean even pluck of all four strings. Feedback welcome.

lisadmhParticipantI can’t even say how much I love this song, and I wouldn’t have tried it being at level two. Thanks Andrew.
It’s far from perfect, really rough at the beginning, and there’s an extra bar in there somewhere near the end, but I made it all the way through. I will definitely continue working on this, cleaning it up, and getting the memorization down. I want to be able to play this right.
Feedback welcome, from all!

lisadmhParticipantThanks Andrew. I love the video instructions. I will work on it. And y’all can keep me accountable for my progress!

lisadmhParticipantI’m in. There are so many things to work on, but I’m going to start with the thing Andrew advised me on yesterday.
I have trouble getting a clean 4 string pluck after a slap. Apparently I’m bouncing around too much. Here’s the rather embarrassing video I avoided posting publicly, but whatever. I’ll practice for 5 to 10 minutes a day on simple blues chords, then apply to various songs.
Application: I’ll use it in the Waimanolo Blues as well as the 12 bar Blues Strumming beginner song. The 12 Bar Blues gives me my simple chords I know well for the basic practice.
Evaluation. New video in 2 weeks or so with some progress I hope.

lisadmhParticipantThanks for the video answers! I knew you were going to say memorize. π I’ve got about two pages memorized, unreliably. I actually cut the pages and pasted, keeping only the rhythm line and losing all the empty bars. 5 pages now. Somewhat easier.
For the question about making the a string ring, I wonder if she meant when plucking all four strings together. That’s the problem I have. The a is drowned out when plucking all four. Any advice there?
lisadmhParticipantBananas. π
Thanks for all these answers. Great stuff!

lisadmhParticipantHi Andrew. It’s only day 2, but the biggest problem I’m having is figuring out how to arrange ten sheets of paper around me in a viewable way. It isn’t pretty in my living room and entirely too enticing for the cats.
Is it hard/easy/possible/reasonable to post tabs with just the main part (rhythm) to fit more on a page? If this is a big ask, please ignore it in favor of creating new arrangements π π but I thought I’d put it out there. Thanks!

lisadmhParticipantChallenging for me too, but I’m in! Very slow and hopefully steady. Thanks for pushing me to try the daunting level two.
Edited an youth and a half later to say: I love this challenge! The Hawaiian blues one is awesome. It’ll be a process, but thank you for recharging me. I was getting bored and unfocused. This is perfect. π

lisadmhParticipantStrength, courage, and recovery to you Kit! We’ll be strumming in your honor.
lisadmhParticipantHi Andrew. I was looking forward to seeing some action on this thread because I’m new to the uke and really don’t know any uke artists other than Jake, and him just barely. Considering there are no replies after 3 days, maybe a lot of other members are in the same boat.
Maybe you could post your top three and we could vote? And people could add others if they know them? I know I could use some uke mentors other than you π (you’re great, but to expand my horizons you know).
The one you posted is great.

lisadmhParticipantI’m trying to figure out the muting the first string with the thumb but I can’t keep hold of the uke. My hand is too tight to slide up to the next note and when I lift I drop. But I can’t wrap around to mute and keep a loose hold. Any tips?
lisadmhParticipantHe has already done Norwegian Wood beautifully. π Enjoy!
