robinboydParticipantNice job Rick. That’s a really hard piece!
robinboydParticipantOctober 2017. I came across the monthly challenge (I don’t remember how) and I thought I’d give it a go. I just had a free membership at the time and I decided to work out the second half of the tune by watching the performance without access to the lesson or the tabs. I remember Andrew told me I had inadvertently added half a bar, and at that point, I figured I’d better get paid membership (especially because I was going to tackle a quite tricky piece next). FWIW, the first song I learned was the Stranger Things Theme, and the tricky one I learned next was Hedwig’s Theme.
robinboydParticipantHi Jo.
It’s not always as easy as substituting notes because you also need to consider things like timbre, the flow of the song, and the left-hand gymnastics required. I’ve linked a video of me playing an RC101 arrangement for high G, which I rearranged for low G (actually, the uke is tuned Bb (F, Bb, D, G) but you get the idea). As you can see, it is not a straight transposition of notes onto another string. For example, the arpeggios now start on the low G string because they aren’t relevant to the melody. I’d stick to low G arrangements for now until you are confident playing around with them yourself. There are plenty of arrangements for low G on this site. The other thing you can do is to get a second uke that is tuned high G. A good way to do that would be to win one of the monthly challenges 🙂

robinboydParticipant@miztaken – If it helps, when I learned the triplet picking technique for Out in the North a few months ago, it really messed with my head too.
robinboydParticipantI love the T-shirt. I only have my UAS virus T-shirt, but I can’t find it right now.

robinboydParticipant@Santai – Thank you. Both of yours are amazing!
Spark of life kind of reminds me of this song. It will sound great with lyrics.
Oh, and congratulations on the baby!

robinboydParticipantHey @rockmyuke. I absolutely love your ukulele. Is that a custom?

robinboydParticipant@cncamacho – Thanks so much for taking the time to learn my tune. It’s great!
robinboydParticipantI’m guessing he’s playing a “Hawaiian D7.” You can find information on it here: https://ukuleletricks.com/hawaiian-d7-ukulele-chord/#:~:text=To%20play%20the%20Hawaiian%20D7,a%20D7%20chord%20on%20ukulele.
Otherwise, G and C seem to be correct.
If you want to know for sure, you could always ask Brian (the performer) on the UU forums. I’m sure he’d help you out.
robinboydParticipantHi Chuckie,
I’m also slow at reading tabs, etc. Some people are just slower than others. I got a lot faster with practice, but I’m still not exactly quick. On the other hand, I have a pretty good ear. Different people have different strengths.

robinboydParticipanta), b), and c) would all work.
FWIW, I already have a Bb-tuned uke (one semitone lower than you would need). Going back and forth would cause issues with holding tune, but it’s fine if you don’t change it often. I just leave one of my ukes in Bb tuning permanently.
robinboydParticipant@artcrocker – I do it like you do. I take small sections and build up muscle memory.

robinboydParticipantHi Grace,
To follow up on what Andrew said, it all depends on the person. I’m a very self-directed learner and I like to learn at my own pace, so regular private lessons really wouldn’t work for me. On the other hand, I’ve had a lesson with Stephen when I got stuck on something, and it was really helpful. Some people find that regular lessons help keep them on track, though. Some people never have private lessons at all, and they do just fine. It all depends on you. If you want to try private lessons, why not give them a go? See if they work for you.
