So awesome to see this new lesson taught by you, Matt! I’ve been following you and watching the UU Webcam Sessions on YouTube for a couple months and find the information so useful! Also…I’ve always admired your Kanile’a with the numbered frets. WANT (I suffer from UAS, so that doesn’t help). 😝

Welcome to the RC101 community! I can’t wait to see what else you have in store for us in the future.

My friends are highly anticipating me learning some Christmas tunes and this one seems right at my level. 😊

Loving that new uke, Maureen! That harmonic sounded on point. How are you liking the strings? Are they better now?

I’m not quite ready to post a video. As much as I love Moon, I know I’d never be able to remember it all. I’m working on La Gitanita, but as always, my biggest problem is timing. 🙃

So cool, Brett! You know, what I always enjoy so much about your videos is the entertainment value. It doesn’t matter that you didn’t play it perfectly because you have so much style and creativity in your playing (and video editing) that it never falls short of “fun to watch.” I especially like the layover you added for the singing part by replacing it with a guitar instrumental accompaniment. You definitely know how to work what you have!

    I’ve quickly become a fan! 🙂

    I don’t know…

Becky, if you’re talking about what I think you are, I’ve seen notes can be played beyond the frets, but that’s pretty high level to be able to get it right.

Check out Jake Shimabukuro video below around the 0:40 mark.

When I was shopping around for an affordable tenor, these two were my first choices:

Islander MT-4-RB (or the Islander MT-4-HNS with the turtle engraving are both variations of the same model, MT-4, mahogany tenor)

    or

    Kala KA-EBY-T

I ended up getting the MT-4-RB when it was on sale for less than $200, but if you don’t care about the binding, Uke Republic has the HNS version on sale for $148 (if you’re in the states, that’s a pretty great deal).

I’ve seen a couple others on this forum with the Kala ebony tenor and it sounds great. I hear it plays great, too. I have two other Kala ukes and I really like the brand.

I emailed Mike at Uke Republic a few months ago which he’d recommend between the Córdoba 20TM or the Kala ebony tenor. He said the Kala for sure (for “beautiful tone and looks”). The Kala is all laminate, but isn’t short on charm or quality.

Maybe Day Dreaming? The 4th string is used for some of the notes as opposed to what’s also played on string 2 (bars 5,6 and 9-11).

    🤷🏻‍♀️

That sounds like something Andrew will be able to answer.

I have a tendency to think that it’s up to the person writing the arrangement whether you choose to use the G string or not. It may come down to whatever is easiest/comfortable to play in relative closeness to the other notes/strings or picking pattern.

As a basis of comparison, I have seen the C scale shown to be played on strings 2-4 as a simple walk up the scale, but I have seen another person introduce playing the G on the open 4th string rather than on the third fret of the 2nd string. To me, that breaks up the flow by going from string 2 back to 4 for one note only to continue playing the scale back on string 1, but maybe that person had a reason for playing it that way. Either way, the end result is the same (it was still a G, just a different string). I found it awkward, but maybe that person didn’t.

I have also heard people saying it may be the same note (same octave), but playing it on different strings have a different “color.” My ear isn’t attuned to hearing that minute difference.

Hey, @toastedbrains…One of RC101’s members, @awiealissa, has a tutorial of that song on YouTube with some fingerpicking. Have you tried it?

    Here’s a different one I found:

If you’re truly looking for a chord melody arrangement (less strumming, more fingerpicking), then you might have to create your own. Andrew has a course on How to Write a Song on the Ukulele that goes into depth about writing chord melody songs. I don’t know if you’re a premium member to be able to access it, but maybe give that a shot?

Oh, cool! I guess you can’t go much wrong with occasional/casual use for $7.

For anyone curious, here’s the pickup on Amazon (US).

@hlglazi – it’s probably set to private and may need to be changed to unlisted.

I know what you mean! I’m doing La Gitanita this month, but you’ve at least got a start on Moon if you wanted to keep going. It’s still impressive!

Haha! That’s weird. Are we talking about the same thing? We’re complete opposites. 😂😂😂

Maybe the ones that come on the Pono aren’t fluorocarbon then. The description shows:
“All Ko’olau ‘Alohi (Hawaiian for brilliance, pronouced A-lo-hee) are crafted from a dense monofilament material that has an attractive, translucent purple hue. They have a polished, smooth feel analogous to nylon, but with a slightly brighter tone and increased projection.”

I’m not sure what that means. lol! Better call a strings expert because clearly I’m not it. 😆

OMG, @nggnmm! Amazing start so early after the lesson was released. I’m pretty sure you’re clear of level zero with that kind of playing. 😉

I bet that uke is pretty awesome! Congrats and really nice job on the song so far. Can’t wait to see and hear the rest later next month!

Being that the C string is normally the lowest string, I bet that wound third is pretty thick (more so than low G). I honestly think it’s a matter of the tension difference going from nylgut to fluorocarbon that’s creating most of the new learning curve (I know I did minus the wound string part).

I don’t know if any of your past ukes have had a set up, but for me, my Pono was the first and the action was a lot lower. I found it easier to play the first fret, but there was a lot of muting I did elsewhere probably because I hadn’t adjusted to the action difference and new string flexibility. 🤷🏻‍♀️

All I know is, the fluorocarbons are way easier on my fingertips and they hurt less after getting my Pono. 😂
