Thanks Andrew for your feedback. I think I will look into microphone options, and keep working on my finger positioning too.

Sheryl, I loved your composition and beautiful playing, and your description was lovely too.
And Holly, your clawhammer style is great. I was excited to see the lesson recently posted, especially since I also received a banjouke from Santa.

    Thanks again to all,
    Karen

Here’s my version of Grace’s Lullaby which I really enjoyed learning. I worked to be more relaxed in my playing despite the record button. It sounds more “tinny” than I would like which I like to blame on my less than stellar quality MacBook microphone. The full strum sounds so harsh compared to the individual string picking and I would like to work on a more consistent volume. I’ve enjoyed everyone’s submissions, especially the original compositions. Thanks again to all.

Here’s m December submission. I challenged myself by playing it on a 8 string Tenor which was trickier than I thought. I am not used to the tenor size, not to mention the extra strings which added extra buzz. And then there is the instant tension once I hit record. I love seeing everyone’s submissions and hope some day to play in a more relaxed, smooth way. In the meantime, this is the best of my zillion takes.

I wish happy holidays to everyone who celebrates anything this time of year, even if it is just the Winter Solstice or Festivus.

Here’s my submission of House of the Rising Sun. As usual, I had a hard time getting a clean recording despite endless takes. I am getting a smidgeon more comfortable with the recorder on, but do wish it sounded better. Looking at the video, I think my left hand position is all over the place.

This was a fun song to learn. I’ve also enjoyed other’s submissions. I noticed the YouTube platform has added some extra steps, so it’s no surprise some people are having trouble. Hopefully this link works okay.

Happy Thanksgiving to all who celebrate! Are you all ready for a few rounds of Over the River and Through the Woods?

I am thankful for all the RC 101 community!
    Take care,

I did love the Disturbed video of Sound of Silence and recalled an interview on NPR from awhile ago. It’s amazing how the facial expressions in the video influence the listening experience. Here’s a link if anyone is interested:

Here is my version of Sound of Silence. This has always been one of my favorite songs and I’ve appreciated the chance to learn it. I wish it was cleaner, and know I especially need to work on my transitions. And my tone. And a consistent tempo. And the buzzing. It always goes so much worse when I hit record. Blame it on the ghosts? After a zillion takes, I just need to move on. The lights, by the way, are spiders. Despite the mistakes, it is nice to see some slow but steady progress since I first started.

Thanks again for a great challenge. I’ve enjoyed everyone’s submissions so far and look forward to those yet to come.

    Happy Halloween!!!

I’ve been enjoying the strumming course but have been too busy for a submission this month. I wish you all well and look forward to learning from your submissions and feedback. Happy Fall!

Here’s my August Submission of Kemp’s Jig. After multiple takes, this is my cleanest recording. I still wish it was smoother and the notes were clearer, especially the pull offs and that dang
Em shape. I am at my Dad’s (a ukulele player too at age 87!) who has been listening to these endless attemps and you can hear his excitement at the end which made me laugh.

I’ve had fun learning this song. And it’s been nice viewing other submissions, especially La Gitanita which I think was the first Rock Class challenge attempt. Thanks again to the RC101 instructors and family!

Congrats to Rufio! And thanks for the feedback on finger position to improve my pull-offs. I’m looking forward to working on the August challenge options.

Thanks robinboyd. I love my Cocobolo. Their production is limited and I feel honored to be able to own one. Some day I hope my skills improve enough to be able to show it off a little better. . . .

I am a movie fan and thus loved the song options this month! I spent way too much time playing around with all of them to the point of not mastering any. Well, then there was the time spent rewatching season 2 and binging season 3 of Stranger Things. I am not happy with this performance despite way more takes than I would like to admit. I continue to struggle with the pull-offs, but feel good about the progress I made with them compared to the first of the month. I watched the pull-off lesson several times but still struggle to get a good sound to ring out, especially with the Em. I am still trying to play smoother and more relaxed too. But I did have fun with the Stranger Things background and the most 80s shirt in my closet. Thanks again for a fun challenge! I’ve enjoyed listening to others’ submissions.

Holly, I loved the kazoo part! I think kazoo and ukulele are a match made in heaven!

If anyone is interested in adding to or upgrading their the kazoo collection, I love my wooden kazoo from the Doc Kazoo/Aswego Kazoo company.

Thanks for the feedback. I had a hard time getting that rhythm in my head, I think partly because I had been playing it incorrectly initially, went back to the videos but it never quite stuck. I do like the ability to slow down the tab streamer and play along. But there is the inevitable brain freeze once I hit record. Ugh. I’ll keep working on it! I’m also working on the fancy ending but still have a long way to go on that too.

I’ve been enjoying everyone’s submissions. The Aloha “Oe have been especially pretty. They really make me feel like I’m in Hawaii and I’m inspired to learn that song too. I do live in coastal Maine and although I don’t surf, I do walk the beach regularly and like watching the surfers. Maybe some of that vibe will rub off.

    Aloha,
    Karen
