@Andrew Most improv is a reconfiguration of what you already know how to play. This can be seen in the most famous lick meme compilation: The Lick

I haven’t seen this video with a lick meme compilation before.

But I really liked “this lick” in the following video:

First of all, I like that lick was adapted for certain instruments and the accompanying voices were added.

    Happy New Year!

Execution: I want to arrange and play The Pogues’ ‘Dirty Old Town’ “as a band”.

Application: I’ll watch a few different live recordings of the song. I’ll also watch different covers of the song for different instruments. I’ll think about what instruments and what key I’ll play.

Evaluation: I’ll record and post what I’ve got by the end of the month.

@the_bumble_bard Ah yes, time flies and Christmas is coming soon 🌲🌲🌲

Gareth Green wrote the crab canon for a piano and I just played it. It is quite comfortable on baritone and bass uke.

In my opinion, the video by Gareth Green is not too long (25 minutes). It is practical. I will recommend it to anyone who wants to write a crab canon 🤓

I wish you much success whether with a crab canon or without 🙂

Gareth Green shows how he writes this canon in his YT channel:

@the_bumble_bard So! I tried out a short canon by Gareth Green.
In the video you will first find the melody, then the melody backwards (two octaves below) and finally the whole crab canon. I was hoping that the metronome would be audible, but it seems that it is not.

    Hi!
    I liked your melody 🙂

    I wrote down your melody in a music editor (I really hope I didn’t make too many mistakes). I have a suspicion that you don’t have G, D, C, D, G… More like G, C, G, D, C, D, G, G.
Would you like to try writing down your melody yourself?
We could compare to see if we get the same result.
Will you play the melody backwards by ear (that is, will you make another video) or will the video editor play the video that already exists backwards?

@the_bumble_bard So, here I have a canon with a cup beat. This is of course not a fugue by J.S. Bach, but it is also polyphony 😉

„Hejo, spann den Wagen an“ is a harvest song (folk song).
Cup beat by Tatjana Friedrich & Finn Hansen

00:00 Canon with baritone, bass and tenor ukulele, cup beat
00:41 Canon of three voices (only baritone ukulele)
01:05 Canon of two voices on tenor ukulele

@The_Bumble_Bard I’m already interested in what you can do. And will you compose intuitively or using theory?

I like one canon. This is a traditional Thanksgiving song. I don’t know yet when I will have time to record it. I hope I can do it this year 😉

@the_bumble_bard It’s a very brave decision that you want to play canon on the ukulele.
That said, if you use the video editor it might be relatively easy.
But if you try to play at least two voices on a single ukulele by yourself it becomes quite challenging. I’m not saying it’s impossible, but it is challenging. 😅

Have I ever created anything with this (canon) concept?
I am more of a superficial theorist than a practitioner. 🙂

@the_bumble_bard Yes, you have a cup beat like Anna’s. I’m glad your nephews liked it too 🙂

Quote:” …with your version, it still seems like you’re doing different beats with the three-split screen. At least one of them seems different.”
In my video, I used the same (the only one I had) recording of the cup. It’s just that the middle cup was inserted “one measure late” in the video editor. So, as I said, I got a “simple canon”.

I think you’ve heard musical canons before, but most likely you haven’t paid attention. Some children’s songs can be sung as a canon. The most famous of them are “Row, row, row the boat” and “Frere Jacques”. You don’t need to know music theory to sing these children’s songs 🙂

I liked this explanation of the musical canon:

From a music theory point of view, “Row, row, row the boat” is four-voice canon with a „2-measure delay“
I also liked that in this video the musical canon is compared to sudoku. Some canons are really difficult.
