Thank you Andrew. It’s not the instrument as I buzz on all my ukes. Definite user error.

I’m trying to deal with the paradox between pressing harder but loosening up my hand. Will try!

So, here’s where I’m at. I’m posting early in hopes of some feedback. I have the base down but I’m getting some buzzing and not good at that palm mute. Feedback welcome and much appreciated!

That’s pretty amazing but I like the nice, achievable version I here. Thanks Andrew! It’s next on the list.

How are the rest of you doing so far?

I’m on waltz and my biggest problem is that every time I actually get the harmonic right I get deliriously excited and I lose my spot. 🙂

My palm mute is pretty bad and vibrates, but I’m working on it. That harmonic though, so cool!

Wow Jakeypoo, how’d you do that? I hope to get to where you are after a month of practice. Amazing job!

I went to a free festival at a huge music store nearby today.

Saw Kim Mitchel live and got a $40 gift card to the store as a door prize. So I got a baby! I was planning for a concert, but none of them were calling to me and this little guy was so cute. It’s the third one in the picture, a Kala long neck soprano. I’ll get the little extra stretch on the concert fretboard even if it’s soprano, I figure. It’ll eventually get strung to low G.

So here’s my family now. So proud of them. 🙂

Fun new song Andrew. It seemed easy at first glance but you never fail to throw some tricks in. Palm staccato, harmonics, a couple awkward chords, and a weird flicky flick. We’ll find out how we all do. Thanks for the challenge.

    Mmmmmm, mango.

Thanks Andrew! I still want to work to get some more dynamics in this and solidify without tabs, but I’m happy with my progress. Just one major flub. 🙂

The bad buzzing I think was really just one song, Day Dreaming. I didn’t do well with that one.

    Looking forward to the flamenco!

Next weekend there’s a little festival at a music store near by and they will have a spinning wheel for store discounts. If we get a good spin, I’m getting my low G on Saturday. Fingers crossed!

Amazing lesson, Andrew. My head is bursting with all this new information. I think I’ll be listening to that a few times.

    Love the low G uke.

I’d say get the best one you can get in your price range. I think the beginner comment is because absolute beginners don’t know if they’ll like it or stick with it, so don’t want to invest in much. So a good beginner uke would be one that’s pretty good for a low price point. My first one was $40. I upgraded within a few months, but a cheap one was perfect to figure out if I’d like it or not. (Turns out I’m in love)

I see real pro ukes up around $1000 or more, because it’s a career investment. A beginner could buy a $1000 uke to learn on, but why do that if you don’t know if you’ll stick with it?

So to me, something that cost a bit more than entry level but isn’t going to break the bank, doesnt have some of the bells and whistles a pro needs, and is good quality for the price, is an intermediate uke.

I love my islander. I keep trying kalas in the store and I know they’re an industry standard but they don’t sound or feel as good to me, and I’ve found a shocking number of the ones I try have issues with the C string buzzing when fretting the first fret. Many people love kala though. Maybe search for reviews though.

Any chance you can go to a store and try them out? It’s so important to get your fingers on it, I think.

Hmm. I’ve tried the Martin’s on actual Martin ukes at the store and loved them. I’m curious how they’d sound on my little guy. Something about the C string with Aquillas always annoys me and I felt like the Martin’s were better, and felt better on the fingers. I’ll not get my hopes up though. Thanks for the thoughts, gahanby!

Many people, many opinions. I’d like to hear what our fearless leader suggests.

I’ve heard a few months. I’ve also heard that if you run your finger nail along the under side of the strings and feel big grooves from the frets, it’s time to change them. Any other rules out there?

And what are your favorite strings, folks? All I seem to be able to get around here is Aquilla and D’Addario, but I really want to try Martin Fluorocarbon.

Good job awesomestrings! You power through the songs.

Week one check in. How are the rest of you doing?

I’m at about 60% on Brahms lullaby. Pushing for 70, but a couple of chord changes are holding me back – into Am7 mostly, and the high Em this time. That song really works the bar chords too. There are a couple chords in there that I have good muscle memory on already from previous songs, so I’m making some progress somewhere!

With 17 frets on our soprano, I’m wondering what the difference is between ours and a super soprano. It isn’t sold as a super, but isn’t that what it really is? Have you ever gotten to see a super live?
