lisadmhParticipantAfter spending a week on a tropical beach with a uke and no tabs, I have a new appreciation of actually having a set list I can play. It’s was good for me to be away from my tabs and have to stretch my memory I old songs. My actual playable set list was
– Jazz blues – that current month’s challenge
– Strumming the Blues
– Uke blues
– Waimanalo blues
– Ode to Joy – with effort, I got it by the end of the week
– Our first song
– G6 song – YouTube
– 3 finger exercise 2
– 4 finger approach exercise 2
– seven nation armyThat was all I could manage without tabs. They’re stronger after being “forced” to play for a week without looking.
I wonder what the best routine is for keeping songs up. If you average practicing 5 days a week (sometimes I miss some work days), say 3 days on new songs and two only on old songs? Or four and one, with some warm up with old songs every passing day?
I think I’ll try 4 and 1 this month and see how it goes.

lisadmhParticipantI’m doing Day Dreaming. That song is stacked with things in it that I need to learn or am working on.
– Bar chords
– Pull offs
– Em – I struggle to get into that one fast
– Staccato
– Triplet strum set
– The flick up with the thumb for the 1st stringIf I get this one down, it’ll be more than just a song, but real incremental learning. Great one for my level, Andrew. My realistic goal is cleanish and memorized at 80% speed.

lisadmhParticipantThe quality of the sound is terrible, and the quality of the playing isn’t great on a plastic uke and less focus on trying for perfection and speed.
The quality of the experience though, Oh my! This is what it’s all about.

lisadmhParticipantIs there an easy way for a non musically educated person to transcribe a melody? I have a ditty in my head I’d love to be able to play on the uke. Is there maybe an app you could sing into and have it tell you approx what the notes are, which you could then find on the uke?
Thanks!

lisadmhParticipantThanks Andrew. I don’t deny I’m a weakling. I’ll work on getting buff so I can play better uke!

lisadmhParticipantI recorded the whole song because that’s more fun, but you can skip to the rhythm section at 1:22.
It starts bad and it deteriorates even more as I go along, so at the end I can’t even move my fingers I’ve been squeezing so hated. Not once does the E string ring out, and it’s not the only bad string. Getting a little frustrated!

lisadmhParticipantIn the jazz blues, the bar chords are killing me. The rest sounds decent but the rhythm section is a disaster. I can get two or three strings to ring out but never the E string no matter what I do, and my hand is exhausted by the end of that section, I’m pressing so hard.
I’m starting to wonder if my finger just isn’t shaped right to bar 4 strings. Is that even possible?
I love this song but I think I’ll be playing it minus the rhythm section!
I’ve profusely googled bar chord help, but nothing seems to help…

lisadmhParticipantI love my Islander MSS 4 soprano. Plenty of frets and on the low cost end for a solid mahogany uke. It sounds much better than laminate to me.
There’s so much to choose from. If you’ve got a store to visit and try them out, that’s great. Uke Blues Republic has videos for lots of them, which is great for all the dreaming I do. Happy uke shopping. 🙂

lisadmhParticipantAmazing, Harold! Great job. I’m not there yet. I’m at 75% speed, and the bar chords are killing me. I hope to get where you are. Sounds great.

lisadmhParticipantWoot! I’ve been working on the blues song since it was posted and this gives me the motivation to get it clean and at full speed by the end of the month.
Who’d of thought I’d become an aspiring blues ukuleleist? Not I, but here I am.
Fun prize too!
