Great job Rickey! I love it. You got the strumming down for sure. 🙂 Thanks for sharing.

These are good plans, folks. I think i have bits and pieces of lots of these points in my own goals.

I’m going to add one more resolution for myself. When I think I’m ready to post, I will play it for one more week before posting. I get excited when I’m 80% there and I post too soon. I will take a little more time with them to make them cleaner and more relaxed before posting.

I edited to add that while you were replying. See above. 🙂

Hey there. I have the MSS4, so the same one except soprano size, in mahogany. It really has a great sound. I have a few other ukes, and i like them, but whenever I come back to my islander I’m struck by how much better it sounds.

I can’t compare with Acacia as I don’t have one, but I’ve been very satisfied with the islander mahogany.

Edit: Strings. I’m still figuring out exactly what I like but flurocarbon for sure. Martins are good. I’ve just tried my first Worth Browns and i like them. Not sure i have a favorite yet though.

Hey there. I started with a cheap little guy too. It’s a fine place to start. But if you’re ready for #2 already, you’ll find no lack of options.

Mike at Uke Republic can help out. Here’s his list of ukes under $250, below. There are some great sales on right now, so you could really get something good at your $200 price. I’m a big fan of my Islander. He’s got some nice Ohana’s on sale too though.

In a perfect world, you could go try them out before buying and find one that you really like the sound of. That’s not always possible these days though. Some of the ones on the list have videos, at least.

Pay attention to the number of frets. If you get a 12 fret uke, you’ll run into problems with a lot of songs around here. For me, making sure it has lots of fret markers is good too – ideally up to the 15th fret, although that’s not a deal breaker for me. Solid wood, or solid wood top, gives a great sound, but you’re right at the cusp of the entry price point for solid wood instead of laminate.

Anyway, check these out. Apparently they’re great with answering questions too. Have fun. 🙂

Great idea @tsetsova. I’d love a lesson on arranging.

Congrats @junkourata! Enjoy! I hope you’ll play us something on it. 🙂

Thanks for the chance, @Andrew. That was fun!

Hey there. I figure I’m intermediate at this point by RC standards. It depends on the song, for sure. If they’re easily within my reach (level 1 or 2), I can get them playable within a week of solid practicing, but I’m highly prone to the occasional error at that point, and don’t have any or many subtleties like dynamics. The harder it is, and the cleaner and fancier I want to play it, the longer it takes.

It used to take me the full month of the challenge to get anything remotely recordable. Now I usually post part way through the month, but it would be better if I would take another week or two to make it cleaner before posting. I get excited about sharing too early. 🙂

TL/DR: It depends, but it gets faster in time.

Hi Qiuyan. Thanks for sharing! It’s really interesting to hear the two versions side by side. Well done on both! I’ve played the first version. I am surprised that I really like the triplet picking version better when comparing the two. It has an interesting ring to it.

@cinichol. I memorize them these days because it usually comes pretty easy to me, but it certainly didn’t at the beginning. I used to read the sheets for challenges. I think memorization is a thing to strive toward, but don’t let it prevent you from entering the challenges. If you need to read, nobody will judge you (except maybe Andrew, lolol, but he’ll understand too).

Oh, for different strumming and picking techniques, I’d love to learn how to do what this guy is doing, after the intro. It’s very cool.

🙂 Awesome name and description. Now I have another thing to look forward to. Thanks for naming things! It’ll be easier on my little brain.

Thank you for a great year, @Andrew and the whole team. I love everything you folks do here. What an amazing roster of lessons you put out this year.

One of my favorite things is when you post a new song/course/technique and it’s something I never knew existed, and I love it. A big example this year was the clawhammer course. I never would have known to ask for it, but I love it and it added a brand new thing to my limited little repertoire. That was a highlight for me this year. I look forward to whatever unexpected new things you have to throw at us this year.

I’m hoping you’ll continue with low G songs. Low G has become my go-to uke. I’m also hoping you’ll continue with originals. Those are some of my favorites. Please name them though. 🙂 Right now I’m working on Étude 5? or is it 14? No, I think it’s 17 — no, no, it’s 7, lol.

I can’t think of anything else right now. You folks have such a great balance between different techniques, different teachers, different teaching styles, different genres (although some indie rock/pop would be awesome, just sayin’). The big challenge is keeping up!

Happy Holidays, RockClass101 Family. You’ve provided the light in a pretty difficult year. Enjoy your much deserved break. I’m super looking forward to Gymnopédie in January.

That sounds really cool! Thanks for sharing.

There are quite a few songs on here with percussion bits in them. In the song search bar, use the term percussive. You’ll find some fun ones!

Thanks for the feedback Andrew. I’ll go back to try to clean up that H/O-P/O lick. It is the crux of the whole song and deserves to be clean.
