This is one of my first takes of the Travis Picking Etude. I tried for better takes but I was panicking for time and just got tense and flustered and started missing more notes and stumbling over the easy bits! I swear I’m not even breathing in one video.
I made the rookie mistake of not reading the instructions properly and didn’t realise I could play it either swing or straight so I was aiming for swing and ended up finding myself reverting to the norm here and there, doh!
Entering anyway ‘cos that Kanile’a looks amazing! 🙂

ParticipantYes! I’m so excited about Nothing Else Matters, I’ve been wanting to learn it for ages!!! I’m waiting impatiently for it to be Friday over there so I can have a look see… it’s going to take me a lot longer than a month to actually be able to record a version of it but I’m keen to start anyway. Bring it on!!! 🥳

I made the mistake this month of picking a song I liked the sound of and forgetting to actually check what level it was! And then trying to play it along with a backing track that I couldn’t really hear cos the speakers on my laptop weren’t really up to it! Seriously, advanced songs should come with a warning in big red letters to save people like me from making this mistake in future. 😛
Anyway, I tried. It’s not very clean, there are plenty of pauses and I go out of time with the track, but the scenery is nice! 🙂
Here’s my version of 50s Rock & Blues…

So many good songs to choose from this month and I very nearly switched to something else yesterday as I’m seriously struggling with Mad World. But it was highly stressful last month waiting for my video to upload excruciatingly slowly to Youtube as the seconds to cutoff time ticked down so I’m trying not to leave it until the very last minute this month – it’s close, but not quite sooooo close! 😀 So here’s me stumbling my way through Mad World:

ParticipantI had the opportunity to record another video with “the view” so had to give it a go… unfortunately I only had two days to learn and record it!
See my smile of sheer relief at finally making it to the end and hitting the last note with only a few minor brain farts/hesitations along the way. 😀 (I started at sunrise but apparently neither my brain nor my fingers work that early!)

Here’s Path of the Wind. I know there are hesitations and timing issues but my brain is on holiday already and refuses to memorise this one. 🙁 I also need to oil both my chair and my pinky finger apparently, sorry.

I love Morning Dew and the inspiration behind it. When Andrew plays it I can totally see myself lying in bed with the sun shining through the window and birds singing in the garden. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work so well when I play it as I’m so busy panicking about what notes come next!
I played this for the August 2021 challenge and I actually think I was better then, but I’ll blame that on the fact that I haven’t really picked up my ukulele much this year (excuses, excuses!)
Thanks again for such a lovely etude Andrew! 🙂

ParticipantWould love to do how far I’ll go but I suspect I’m a little late. 🫤

I haven’t played for a few months (lack of time) but really wanted to get going again this month and submit an entry. Unfortunately I left it until the 28th to start learning anything, argh! So here’s Fingerpicking Etude (no.1), recorded in a bit of a panic when I realised that daylight saving had changed things and I had less hours left than I thought! A few fluffs and my thumb just refuses to join in sometimes, but I’m just glad to make it to the end. 🙂

First time playing with a backing track but I figured Song of Storms was a good one to start with! I think I need not only new strings but also a better phone for Christmas, this one is beginning to die on me (or maybe it’s just had enough of recording thousands of takes!) 😀
Anyway, here ’tis…

ParticipantThis time last year I was busy trying to get a decent take of “Morning Dew” and it’s still one of my favourites to play. Here’s another lovely tune written by Andrew and not done justice by me. My right hand seems to do fine as long as I don’t think about it (if I do, it all goes horribly wrong!), I just need to train my left hand to make those transitions a little faster!

ParticipantI’m with @nelsonlin2021! I don’t know whether it’s my speakers or my ears, but I struggle to hear the U-Bass so I haven’t got a clue how I fit in with it when suddenly it’s just me and the backing track. I too could do with a bridge of some sort!

ParticipantI’m gutted I couldn’t get 50s Rock & Blues ready in time but will keep practising in the hope of one day having an electric ukulele! Congrats to all those who persevered – it was a tricky month!
Here’s my last minute switch to Aura Lee. I found it really difficult to keep in time and not race to the finish line on this one (and I need more time to try the funky strum flick thing!), but hopefully I’m (just) in time for an entry…July 29, 2022 at 1:48 am in reply to: Participate in the July 2022 Member Challenge: WIN Electric Ukulele! #52899 -
