brettboyParticipantAndrew, Thanks so much for the great challenge and thoughtful critique! It was a mighty challenge working out how to play Moon on my Bari but I’m happy with the way it came together. I see what you mean about pulling the strings too hard. It took so much strength to grab some of the these chords (especially that B7 that I fingered as 9875). You’ll notice that I actually played that one E-minor in the open position halfway through just to give my lefthand a short rest 🙂 I know I could have gotten this piece smoother and the tempo less sluggish if I’d given it another solid week of dedicated practice… but, alas, my Rockclass101 time has recently been nearly nonexistent because I’ve been taking a 10 week Hot Club Jazz class that I started back in September. Actually my recital is tomorrow evening! yikes! The Hot Club Class has been Amazing. I will post of video of my recital on youtube in a few days (unless it’s a disaster of course… knock on wood) But I’m also really looking forward to getting back into your lessons!

brettboyParticipantHi UKE Friends!
Thank you for this awesome challenge! Moon is such a pretty song and it was a serious challenge for me! I spent many hours practicing and watching Evan’s performance and Andrew’s tutorial while struggling to get the cool patterns under my fingers, but I persevered and now I’m ready to share!
I do not currently own a Low G ukulele so I tried learning it on my baritone uke. It was too hard for me to learn in the open position (as taught by RC101 for GCEA tuning) and I did not like the way it sounded with my capo at the 5th fret. Rogue’s are CHEAP-O which means shoddy intonation and buzzing, especially with the capo. In the end, I decided to play it in the correct key without a capo which turned into a serious workout for my left hand. You might notice that I made one little “cut and paste” to cover a part I originally missed and my playing is “quite rough” at times. I have almost all the notes right but I did things a bit weird to avoid some near impossible stretches 🙂
It took me MANY failed attempts to get this recording but I’m actually Super Happy with how it turned out and think it represent my DIY style. I hope you enjoy it and look forward to all comments or critiques 🙂

brettboyParticipantThanks for the kind words Uke-Friends! The muppet is named Chomp-a-Chomp. He has been with me nearly 15 years now. An artist who made the bizarrely amazing “showbeast” puppet show (check it out on on youtube!) made Chomp’ for me 🙂 He lost his eye some years back and I never bothered to reattach it… so giving him a patch was the least I could do.
I didn’t realize that we have to write “I’m a premium member.” It seems like Andrew would already know who is and who isn’t. But, for what it’s worth… I am one! (and I covet the PRIZE!!! 😉

brettboyParticipantAndrew and Stephen! Thanks for the great challenge. I had a blast learning Shadow Land. Here is my submission:
brettboyParticipantHi Teach! Thanks for all the hard work you do!
I don’t own a low G ukulele but I do want one and I know I’ll get one someday. BUT I play my baritone regularly and I have the option to attempt your low G lessons using my baritone (I already understand the tuning differences).
It was your “tv, movie, and video game” lessons that originally attracted me to your website. I always have a lot of fun playing popular tunes like these I also love the pop songs (like la bamba and stand by me) and would love to see more of them. That said, I’m usually content with the lessons you’ve been providing. Since I started practicing your original etudes and classical stuff I notice that I’m definitely learning new skills. Keep up the good work!

brettboyParticipantHi Uke-Stars!
I’m ahead of the game because I learned Allegro last Fall. Here is a video of me playing that tune:
I will take a stab at Classical Waltz too and make a video if I get the time.

brettboyParticipantHi Andrew! I really appreciate the great work you do! Awesome prize for this lighting round too!!!
My question is: Some Uke-Masters (like Jake and Taimane, among others) have AMAZING right hand technique that I find mesmerizing. They can play so fast, smooth and percussive. I’m an upper-intermediate level player in regards to chords, scales and finger-picking but I feel very weak regarding speed and rhythm. I am having a hard time finding resources on youtube. What do you recommend I practice to improve my right hand speed and rhythm??
brettboyParticipantThanks Harold and Andrew!
We both grew up listing to all kinds of music but mostly to indie-rock, punk and rock. Tyree and I both have a lot of influences from those genres (modest mouse is a particularity big one for both of us). We also love bjork and portishead among others that inspire us! This project was also inspired by Rodrigo y Gabriella and Industrial Revelation.

brettboyParticipantThanks for the kind words everyone! I see what you saying Andrew. When I get to theme 4 (measure 25) my left thumb does not want to stay behind the next. But I can see how I’d probably get more control and fumble less during the walk up parts if I can retrain my hand.

brettboyParticipantHi Ukulele Friends. I’ve been learning Ukulele Boogie this month. It’s tricky but it’s really fun to play! I can now play it slow and accurate or fast and sloppy. It’s far from perfect but here is my best attempt at playing it both fast and accurate!
