ParticipantMy first uke was a soprano by Kala that I won in a drawing. When I decided to spend some $$, I bought a Tenor Pono. The soprano is probably a better fit for my hand size, but I love the way the tenor Pono sounds.
I also made a couple of travel uses from a single piece of maple. One is a concert and the second one is an electric tenor. Started with frictionless tuners, then quickly upgraded to geared. I used a piezo rod on the tenor for pickup. Since I could only find a six string piezo rod and it was my first time soldering, one of the strings is very quiet when plugged in.

ParticipantWhat do you recommend using to clean the fret board when changing strings?

ParticipantHi Taimane,
I have seen videos of you on YouTube and you are AMAZING! Your performance style is so unique and beautiful.
What or who has been the biggest influence on developing your music and performance style?
Thanks,

ParticipantHi Andrew,
Your challenges are three for three with me now in having something that I am working on. Did you magically know I am working on (aka struggling with) chucking for the Blues module in the Beginner’s Lesson?
BTW, I pulled out a Uke song book last week that I had bought a Christmas, but had set aside because I couldn’t figure out the music notations like : and D.S. al Coda, etc. After reviewing the Beginner module on music notations again, I was able to study the songs and figure out how to play what part when! I am so excited!!
Thanks,
Connieconnie

Andrew, this song is beautiful both musically and relationally.

ParticipantHi Andrew,
Thanks for the feedback on my July video. I’m seeing some improvements on my hand position, but I think I’ll be working on this for a bit. Video recording helps me stay mindful of it. I’m sure I revert a lot when I am just playing?
I realized one reasons why I do this. This awkward position actually feels nicer in the way the nails hit the strings, because they hit more straight on and less of an angle.
Thanks,

ParticipantHi Andrew,
You were right, this month’s challenge is perfect for where I’m at in the Beginner Course. Trying to submit earlier to get feedback while I’m still working on the song.
I’m also currently working on switching Strumming method from just index finger over to the Claw. I notice my Strumming hand looks like it’s at an odd angle in the video. Not sure if that’s just the angle I shot it at, or the fact that I have long thin hands, or if I need to make an ergo correction.
Thanks! Connie

ParticipantApparently, this is my first uploading videos rodeo. Hahah.
My playing is slow and timing is not quite 100% perfect. However, I put a lot of time and effort into learning it and am thrilled with how far I’ve come this month by focusing on a challenging song (for me). It gave me the perfect opportunity to practice many of the skills from your Beginner course.
Watching my video recordings along the way also showed me mistakes that I didn’t know I was making.

My video was too big to upload. 😳 Just emailed it to you.

ParticipantHi Andrew,
This is my first month in Rock Class 101 and you are filling in a ton of gaps for me! I’m just starting Module 4 of the Beginner Course.
Focusing on Sponge Bob this month was really cool. It exposed some areas that I didn’t know I needed to work on, like finger reach. I have a tenor that I normally play, but I had to switch over to the soprano to complete this song all the way through. I wonder if the tenor is too big for me or if can eventually expand my reach enough. It sounds nice for basic chords, but this song really stretched beyond my reach in a couple places!
Thanks for the challenge! I’m glad you said slow and steady wins the race. I definitely have the slow part down after many hours of working on this.
Thanks Uke Republic for sponsoring the challenge! You are helping us all become better Uke players with the extra motivation.
Cheers,
Connie-
