miztakenParticipantIt is easy – just pre-drill with a drill bit one size smaller than the screw (drill bit = same size as screw BODY without the thread).
I have done it to a few of mine – anything precious I get done at the music store. Eg. My Euc-alele was done by Mike@UkeRepublic.December 24, 2018 at 4:53 pm in reply to: Participate in the December 2018 Member Challenge – LAST CHANCE to Win Kanile’a! #21813
miztakenParticipantCONGRATULATIONS Felix!!!
And thanks Andrew for the video link.
But mostly “thanks Andrew” for the news of the 2019 Reading Standard Notation classes…
The look of glee and tears of laughter from my beloved husband have made a lovely start to my Christmas Day (I have been saying for months now “no, I don’t need to learn that” because I have RockClass101 videos to learn from.
You have just made HIS Christmas!December 24, 2018 at 7:03 am in reply to: Participate in the December 2018 Member Challenge – LAST CHANCE to Win Kanile’a! #21794

miztakenParticipant@nggnmm – I think you are (bloody) brilliant!
You DID it.
It’s not perfect, but your style is lovely and it is a hundred times better than what I can do (I am still in the beginner songs and HAVE to learn all them first because that’s just how I am).
From far away, I am heaps proud of your achievement and it has inspired me to “just start a new song already!”
Thank you for that!!
miztakenParticipantHi Olivia, welcome!
Andrew is a really great teacher, and the way he breaks everything down into small segments makes finger style “do-able” for beginner.
Just be patient with yourself (something I forget to remind myself!) and have tons of fun learning gorgeous compositions.
miztakenParticipantVery pretty sound, no doubt influenced by the amount of practice you have put in.
You have a nice soft touch on the strings – so I am going back for another look… 🙂
miztakenParticipantYou are amazing!!!
Well done. You must have done extraordinarily well – people usually find some way to find fault “constructively”.
Be rightfully proud of yourself, for a huge step in your playing and performing.
miztakenParticipantI have a Waterman – it is nice and strong, but tuning above the fifth fret or so is not very good
The bridge is really high, so action is also high, and the A string often slips off the fretboard with any minor mis-placement of fingering (but I guess that just makes me concentrate on better finger placement).
So really it isn’t good for playing the full neck, but you have probably worked that out with your ukedelic.
Go for the best that you can afford.
Spare $$$$ for other ukulele “stuff” is false savings if you end up with another uke that just doesn’t meet your needs (I refer back to my own #1, #2,#3, #5 ukes 🤭).And ask Mike@uke Republic- he may clarify any ????s for you.
miztakenParticipantVery nice looking instrument!!!
And any excuse to buy more uke gear is a valid reason 😀
miztakenParticipantI started looking at Bad Moon Rising the other day… thinking “I am getting bored at times, and need something new…”
And it made my head spin on the first two chords!
OK so I am not up to that level yet, back to the beginners songs and finish the Finger style lessons. And then I looked at Evan’s videos for some inspiration – baaad move!!!
That lad obviously practices as much as I do, but he has the youth and natural ability which I miss out on. Sigh.So back to desperately wanting to do more, accepting current limitations and practice, practice, practice.
Bugger.

miztakenParticipant@Andrew – clarification….
When @leahwooseley plays thumb style, she anchors her hand at the neck not on the body below the sound hole, and just thumb picks at the top of the neck.
I am thinking I should try this – currently I hate thumb picking because I cannot reach properly or cleanly because of my dinky, short thumb when I anchor my hand below the sound hole.My question:
“Andrew – is that hold too restrictive?…
Or do I just need the dreaded “practice, practice, practice”?”refers to – Will anchoring my hand where the neck meets the body give me playing restrictions as I progress? Am I going to need more mobility with my right hand up and down the neck for thumb picking?!?
Thumb picking really only goes across the four strings, and at this position I can easily reach across almost “gracefully” 😉
…clear as mud.
miztakenParticipantHi @lyndallk – I knew you were in Sydney (North side if I remember right).
We are Hobbits from the Shire (we consider ourselves the only Shire, the others are imposters with no bridges to keep out invaders from the North 😀 ).
The storms were a little disappointing this side – but watching the BOM radar has kept me entertained 🙂(Sorry Bryan, hogging your intro…)
miztakenParticipantHi Bryan, welcome!
I went to Boise, Idaho a few years ago for a scrapbooking weekend – from Sydney, Australia!!!!Have fun learning, and use all Andrew’s competition feedback tips to quietly improve your own playing – they allow you to learn more technique whilst skulking in the background 🙂

miztakenParticipant@leahwoosley – I love your take on First Noel, hat, tree, the works!
AND I like how you hold the neck for thumb style!!!!
I have a dinky little thumb, see picture – and I find it really awkward to play thumb style whilst anchoring my fingers on the uke body. But your method of holding has inspired me, thanks!Andrew – is that hold too restrictive? (please say no)
Currently, any hold or anchoring point just causes awkwardness, and swearing.
Or do I just need the dreaded “practice, practice, practice”? -
