Thanks, @andrew, for the tips on eliminating string noise. I will pay attention to the first two moving forward. Lowering the string height is beyond my ability 🙂

    Aloha and happy holidays

I had a hard time choosing the song this month. At first, I thought I would go with Chopsticks since I did that before and could maybe make a comparison of how much/or little I have improved.

But I liked the melody of God Rest Te Merry Gentlemen. Interestingly, in this month’s challenge video, Andrew said this song is for the beginner level, which is me. However, when I went to the lesson page, it stated that this song was for intermediate players. So, I downloaded the PDF file and followed along with the video. To my surprise, I was able to play the song. Obviously, there are many areas I need to work on, but the fact that I can practice this song made me happy.

With the video angle, it is so apparent that I tend to press down the strings, something Andrew had mentioned before. Didn’t seem to have improved on that front. 🙂 There is so much string “noise” when I lift my fingers. Is there a lesson on how to work on not having string noise?

Again, thanks for a fun class and song.
    Aloha, Grace

Never played a computer game as a child or as an adult 😀 But I do know about super Mario and recognize Luigi’s figure, and that is about it, haha. Had to pick something close to my level, wish I had a low G but I don’t, and then I am heading to the airport for a 2-week trip for Thanksgiving. So, here is what I have recorded for this month’s challenge. A submission is better than no submission. Aloha, Grace

P.S. I also tried to create a similar thumbnail from rockclass101. I am learning uku and design 🙂

I have always wanted to play a song with backtrack music, and I have finally gotten one that is at my level. Picking a song at the right level is important. Last month, I picked one I like but never was able to play it as it was too challenging 🙂 Traveling for the next 2 weeks so here is what I have.

There is no shame in posting a video with any progress made, right? 🙂

    Hi, @Andrew

I see what you mean. If you were to create 3 different levels of an arrangement for the same song, it is like creating 3 arrangements, therefore 3 times the time to creating just one.

I thought when people vote for a song, it would be sad if the arrangement is too challenging or too easy for some members, right?

So I am brainstorming here. Maybe when we vote for the song, then that song will be the only song for a month, with 3 or 4 different arrangements?

Or, maybe each instructor will create a different version, agreeing beforehand who is going to create an arrangement at which level?

Or, each instructor will create a different arrangement at a different level with some pre agreement so that some of the arrangements could be played together as a duet or a trio

    Or … I should get on this month’s challenge …. 🙂

    Mad world

But really I just wanted something that is easy enough for me to play 🙂

Would you consider doing different levels of an arrangement of the same song? That might be an interesting experiment to try at rockclass101?

    Aloha everyone

Here is my submission for this month’s challenge. This piece is deceivingly easy but challenging to get every note clean and to the beat 🙂

Hi, everyone, here is my submission for the December challenge. I really love the sound of Hanukkah, Oh Hanukkah so I decided to upgrade myself to a harder piece. 🙂 The play is …. what it is. But I did spend an enormous effort trying to come up with an impressive festive background for the bonus giveaway. 🙂

What you see in the recording is a Zoom virtual background of the tallest building in Taiwan called Taipei 101 during one of its celebrations. When recording directly in Zoom, the sound quality is not good. So I used my phone to record my computer screen, which had the Zoom open with the virtual background. Anyway, the technology is … what it is. 🙂 I hope you enjoy the background (and maybe the attempted play). Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

    Happy holidays

I am so happy to have found rockclass101. I have learned a lot and really appreciate people’s sharing for motivation and inspiration. I joined in July but still a beginner. For me, the biggest frustrations are 1. songs are too hard (still too hard even after 5 months), and 2. I make no connection between what I (struggle to) play and the music theory behind it. I used to be able to kanikapila with cords. I don’t even remember those cords anymore/ Because the way the songs are arranged, they often don’t use traditional cords, plus we are doing more fingerstyle (that I still struggle to play.) So it just so seemed that there is no point for me to know the actual cords, as long as I could manage to play. If I can add one more frustration – some beautiful songs require a low G uke.  I am not that good enough to invest in another uke.

So, if I could put in my request, I love to have more easier songs, and for each lesson, maybe blend in a little music theory here and there. It might be fun to have the same song arranged for difficult levels.

Keep up the good work. Thanks for listening.
