For me, it was still a valuable exercise. I had to really focus on what I was doing with the timing and at the end of the day, I learned about what worked and what didn’t.

Thanks Andrew. I needed that. I was getting a little bit too excited.

Also, it has been brought to my attention that I forgot to write I AM A PREMIUM MEMBER in my post.

I was just reading through the instructions again and I noticed that the questions are supposed to be ON TOPIC. Sorry that mine were completely off topic. I’ll wait for Andrew’s feedback on the monthly challenge thread, so please ignore them.

    Hi Matt,

I’ve recorded myself and uploaded the video to the monthly challenge page. Here is an excerpt from the post and a link to the video. I’d really like to get your opinion on the timing tweaks that I did.

    Here’s what I did:

    1. I played on the 2 beat in measures 1, 11, and 13, but on the 1 beat in measures 3, 5, 12, and 15.
    2. I unswung (is that a word?) Measure 4, but left the rest of the piece swung.
    3. I changed the timing in measure 11.

Here is dream a little dream.

I wanted to get this up quickly for a few reasons. Firstly, I really want to spend some time working on When I’m 64 for Anne. Secondly, I played around with the timing in this, and I wanted to get a recording done before Matt’s live lesson tomorrow.

I really appreciate that Matt’s arrangements provide some room for creativity. Brenna and Deadbuggy have already demonstrated that with this piece.

Argh @miztaken. It looks like I was wrong. I think it’s a 9:00 am on Tuesday. Hopefully you’ll see this before the lesson and we’ll both make it.

I had thought as much, which is why I initially contacted him by email, the website contact page, and Facebook messenger. When I had given up (yesterday), I sent one last message saying how disappointed I was, which eventually got a response. I think this was all a genuine mix-up, and I’m glad it is getting sorted out now.

Another update: Uke Republic finally got back to me and will make things right. That’s a relief. I wasn’t as worried about not getting the strings I wanted as about not being able to trust one of my favourite sellers anymore, and it looks like both problems have been solved!

After 3 weeks, Uke Republic still hasn’t returned any of my emails or Facebook messages and it looks like nobody else has any Carbonblacks in stock. I’ll have to try the new Martins and see how I go. I would have totally understood if Uke Republic had said something like “you took too long to realise and we don’t have any left in stock, but would you like to buy some of the new Martins instead?” but refusing to respond just makes me angry. I won’t be buying from them again.

@becky7777 – I’m also playing with the timing of the arrangement a lot and I’m also going to murder the arrangement a bit. I’m glad I’m not the only one that’s thinking along those lines. You’ll notice I’ve already left a few questions about timing for Matt on the live lesson thread, and I’m hoping to play with it even more than that by slipping in and out of a swung rhythm. The hard thing is that in order to go about that in a deliberate fashion, I’m finding that I need to know the beat intimately and count out the entire song. It’s not easy!

And you’ve just demonstrated the advantage of living in Sydney. For us, it would take that long to get to Melbourne, and then it would sit in port for a week.

Hi again. I’m also wondering about the first chord in the 1st, 3rd, 11th, 13th, and 15th measures. I sometimes feel like it should be on the 2 count rather than the 1 but I’m really not sure about that. Again, I’d like to get your opinion.

    Hi Matt,

I have a question that is not related to hammer ons or pull offs, but hopefully you’ll be able to help anyway. I’m learning your arrangement of Dream a Little Dream of Me and I feel that the second half of measure 11 should be 1/8 1/4 1/8 rather than 1/8 1/8 1/4. This is harder to play but it feels right. The relevant bit is at 1:05 of this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h7j8wa9sWOE What do you think?

Nope. 3pm on Tuesday. The difference works the other way.
