akukes73ParticipantI chose 4 spooky melodies as they are interesting tunes, but also because I wanted to challenge myself with respect to speed. Sadly I didn’t have as much time to practice as I would have liked and this is my second take recording so quite a few mistakes and ‘squeaks’. However, there are Positives I memorised all 4 songs, and got up to 85% speed for Cemetery Gates and The Escape. I could do the Haunted Mansion and Witches brew at near 100% but so to maintain the feel and contrast between the pieces I maintained roughly 80-85% speed throughout. With regards squeaky notes I do notice even when I am not rushing for some songs the notes seem to ‘squeak’ which must be my technique – any tips?
Happy halloween everyone!

I chose Yesterday – it was a real challenge, I nearly gave up after the first week… anyway I kept going and got it up to 75% speed. I also managed to memorise it, which was another challenge – you can tell at a few point my brain zoned out! It still needs work…April 30, 2022 at 2:40 pm in reply to: Participate in the April 2022 Member Challenge – WIN $6,000 Kanile’a Ukulele #51752

I had wanted to play this with the bass accompaniment but at the start of April me and my family all finally succumbed to Covid. Thankfully all on the mend but it meant I was only able to pick up the uke a few days ago. Anyway here is my attempt at Minuet in G.

akukes73ParticipantJust made this month’s challenge – still room for improvement, but loads of fun learning this one, thanks Steven!

akukes73ParticipantI didn’t have much time this month but here it is… I found that it was difficult to play it so slowly even thought it is at 100%, it seemed to make it harder to get the rhythm. I also found it difficult to play with my thumb, I feel that I don’t have the same control as when I use PIMA. However, the song was a good exercise for me to work on the thumb approach. I also felt that I was able to improve on not pressing down so hard on the strings even for the barring..so small steps but hopefully in the right direction!
Thank you for a lovely arrangement!

Thanks Andrew and Team for many wonderful songs/tutorials this year.
Happy Christmas/holidays everyone!
akukes73ParticipantCongratulations- it’s beautiful. I’ve heard the pineapple shape is optimal for ukulele sustain and sound. Enjoy!
akukes73ParticipantThanks for the feedback Jay! Andrew’s is very fluid and that pedal tone of the open E comes through so well, I’ll try also slowing down slightly to try and improve the flow.

I started off with Valse Venezolano but quickly realised it was too much of an ambitious goal, especially within a month. So here is Tarrega’s beautiful Etude in E minor, still room for improvement (bar 3 I particular) and I’ll keep working on it. However, an achievement for me is that I was able to memorise it and play without the music. Andrew has always advised trying to memorise songs, and this has been something I have been struggling with. So even though this etude is short it is a small step in the right direction!

akukes73Participanthttps://rockclass101.com/members/andrew/ thanks for the constructive feedback! I’ve tried recording myself again and can hear the difference that it makes to the timing of the bars you mentioned.

I had to choose Moon River as it is my sister’s favourite song. I haven’t done it justice but it was fun learning this iconic melody.
July 1, 2021 at 9:38 am in reply to: Best LowG string setup for Steven’s aNueNue tenor ukulele AMM3? #47562
akukes73ParticipantI have the aNueNue AMM3 tenor and for the June challenge, which unfortunately I didn’t get around to submitting, I put a low G on it (worth brown, fluorocarbon, unwound) – I’ve had no problem and had no adjustments made to the nut or saddle. It was actually a string for a concert scale (so maybe it is slightly thinner?) which I never used but it fitted fine and sounds good. The WB low G is well balanced against the other strings and doesn’t seem to dominate. It sounded so much better than I expected. I’ve never been a been a big fan of low G but it sounds great on the AMM3 and I’m going to probably keep it as my low G instrument. Hope that helps.
